@posterj So by your reasoning, anyone who speaks or understands Spanish isn't going to see the film that Spielberg and Kushner intended?

@posterj So by your reasoning, anyone who speaks or understands Spanish isn't going to see the film that Spielberg and Kushner intended? Obviously not, some people will understand it just as the Sharks as characters do. That is the language barrier point. I'm just telling you what Spielberg himself has said in interviews - the lack of subtitles is a deliberate artistic choice made by him and Tony Kushner. You said right at the start you wanted to see the film as Kushner intended, well there you go. If you dont like it that's your prerogative, but it is exactly what you were asking for.

One solution would be to put off seeing the film for six months and take an intensive Spanish course. Then they'd have nothing to moan about. Sorted!

If Maria asks Tony for four beers and a full english I’ll know exactly what she said.

Pretty much universal raves about the performances (Elgort aside). Any criticism seems to be mainly about the script's pacing or from people who don't understand the point of remaking WSS.
Rachel Zegler has been awarded Best Actress by the National Board of Review, and Ariana DeBose, Spielberg and the film itself all nominated for Hollywood Critics Association awards.

Sounds very good but it seems that it’s following the old film rather than the stage production which is annoying. I much prefer the order and score from the production to the old film.

I haven't seen this yet and don't plan to until a couple of weeks' time when there will be fewer audience members in the cinema to watch it (how I'm approaching all films at the moment), but something I haven't seen mentioned is the disappointing lowering of Tony's keys in this. Could Ansel just not sing as written?
Still very much looking forward to it, though.

Might not need to wait if your cinemas are like mine. 3 at Rons Gone Wrong on Thursday evening and I was the only one at Encanto yesterday. Different cinemas but both about 150 person screens!

I've just had a look at my local Vue which is a massive multi screen complex and they don't even have it listed.

It isn't following the old film, most of the songs have been moved... I meant, for example, America being a song between the men and women . Wonder if the somewhere sequence will be like the show as it’s unclear from the recording.

Just a thought I think it will lead to more of the classics getting new film adaptations. I know MGM has a new Fiddler on the Roof in development for example.

I would like us to get better versions of the classics whose movie versions aren't great (Carousel, South Pacific) or some that haven't been filmed at all (Mack & Mabel) but suspect that like West Side Story they will remake good movies such as Oliver!

I'd like see My Fair Lady redone, Oliver! was in development with Cameron Mackintosh teaming up with Sony and Working Title.

Alas, I just think CAROUSEL is too "problematic" for a major motion picture these days. But gosh, that score....
