HBO is developing a film adaption. Maybe I’m a cynic but I can’t see a film working well at all. First of all there’s the Gabe problem, it will take a hell of a director to handle his ‘disposition’ on film without it coming off as jarring. That aspect of his character lends itself much easier to the stage. Then there’s the fact that the musical is sung through. With recent movie-musicals seemingly loathed to admit that’s what they are, I have no idea how they’re even going to pretend it’s not one.

It's such a niche musical that it might just go straight to streaming at which point I don't think they need to pretend it's not a musical.

Honestly Jack Wolfe would be perfect for screen Gabe, but he might age out of the role by the time they got to filming as we know how long these things can stay in production hell. I just hope they get a distributor for the pro shot and/or just sell it on demand otherwise.

I think it would be safe to assume this is not making it to Broadway before my march 25 trip?

I hope they wait, why go against Sunset Boulevard again. They have better chances to win that Tony the following year.

Maybe Mincemeat grabbed the theatre they were eying up!

I haven't heard if a transfer is dead in the water, however I have heard rumours that Cassie might be engaged for longer than expected with an upcoming job. So it might be a longer wait than we thought.

I think it would be safe to assume this is not making it to Broadway before my march 25 trip? There's some speculation on BroadwayWorld that it will get transferred as a collaboration with one of the non-profit B'way companies, likely Roundabout Theatre Co. This seems likely considering a purely commercial run would be a risk considering it wasn't a sell-out at the Wyndham's. So, if it happens, will be a part of 2025-26 season.

Does anybody know when the recording is likely to come out? I need my Next To Normal fix.

They never SAID there was, but the very few promo videos they did were filmed in a recording studio which seems an odd thing to book for like three videos and little other social media. Also looks like Ragtime is taking the theatre Tammy Faye is in so I wouldn't expect NTN on Broadway SOON SOON, however Ragtime has a history of only lasting a few months at most so maybe second half of 2025?

I guess to me it was just odd because it was pretty much the ONLY shoot they did and it just seemed like a weird choice to me. Usually there is more rehearsal, sit downs, get-to-knows, etc. Maybe wishful thinking on my part admittedly.

Does anybody know when the recording is likely to come out? I need my Next To Normal fix. Michael Longhurst has "Next to Normal (Pro-shot)" has his upcoming project in his Instagram bio so I would hope it's somewhat soon? Maybe early next year? At the very least it's confirmation that it will be publicly available so that's a relief. On another note Jennifer Damiano and Jack Wolfe sang together at Jack's 54 Below show the other night. There's a couple of clips online and they both sound great. Damiano's my favourite voice on the OBC so it was lovely to see them performing together.

Interesting to learn on the Amber Davies Call to Stage podcast that Sam Tutty was in the running to play Gabe (he really wanted it, but conceded that Jack Wolfe was perfect in the role). Speaking of Jack, I have been loving the clips popping up from his 54 Below shows. Particularly thrilling to hear him sing 'I Miss the Mountains'.
Can't wait for news of the pro-shot release! So thrilled I'll get to see and savour this show in another medium.

Sam would have been very good! Jack was perfect though.

Sam is very good at the comedic and hammy thing (hence why he did so well in DEH, and Two Strangers) but I feel like that wouldn't fit with Gabe. It would be interesting to see him play a darker role like Gabe. He certainly has the voice for it! I just feel like we haven't seen him show his ability to play darker or even more subdued roles yet
