Post show report:
Yeah, this is it folks. No major changes outside necessary staging changes, though the finale has one word that is performed slightly differently and is so intense. Instant standing ovation before the lights even came on, Eleanor seemed overwhelmed and it was truly a magical night. I wouldn't expect ticket sales to stay slow after previews, so get them now while you can. This is a top 3 live performance of anything (plays, musicals, concerts) I've ever seen. The cast is perfect. In fact, I would say that while it is missing the intimacy of Donmar, the cast's vocals have (somehow) gotten better in the time. Jamie Parker is even stronger than before. Caissie is a powerhouse. Jack Wolfe's I'm Alive was the best I ever heard it.
The one thing to be aware of is that I think Donmar had a slightly better sound system, but also could have been where I was sitting.
Not going to be able to stop thinking about this for a while (yet again)

The response Jack Wolfe got after I’m Alive was truly incredible.

After tonight, I stand by my opinion that Jamie Parker was absolutely robbed of an Olivier nomination (and the award). I don’t know how, but the cast are even better than last year. Caissie’s I Miss the Mountains was on another level. I’m booked in for the final night, but I’m sure I’ll be back again before then.
Merch is…eh. Mostly pieces with the main artwork (t-shirt, magnet, pin, pen, socks with the stars, moons and pills), a mug that says ‘Living on a latte and a prayer’ on one side and ‘Next to Normal’ on the other, an ‘I Miss the Mountains’ pullover, and then a comic book style ‘Superboy and the Invisible Girl’ tote bag.

I had a fantastic time at the first preview, even sat up in the grand circle I don't feel that I was massively missing the intimacy of the Donmar. Definitely not one to miss.
The sound really wasn't great up there though, and unfortunately this seemed to mostly affect Cassie. The sound balance with the band was poor and I couldn't make out a lot of the lyrics (even with the benefit of being reasonably familiar with them, albeit less so than about a decade ago!).
I'll definitely revisit in a few weeks, hopefully some of the sound issues may have been resolved by then (and I'll try for better seats).

Those booking seats - further back may in fact be better … I would not recommend anything closer than Row E. Stage is quite high.

I also sat up in the grand, view wasn't great but the production was just as incredible as it was at the Donmar. Such a special production!

It's so evident that they spent 9 months thinking about the bits of this that could be improved, and it's thrilling to watch.
It was spectacular at the Donmar. It's grown in ways I didn't think possible, and I couldnt have foreseen - some of the tiny changes as someone who knows it inside out are SPECTACULAR and unbearably moving (particularly the redirection of the opening of I Miss The Mountains - I had to catch my breath)
The cast are just as wonderful before, with a special shout-out to Jamie Parker who was my performance of 2023 and should have an Olivier for playing Dan. He's even better now, and the four Goodman's are so special in this.
I hoped I wouldn't have to go weekly, like I did at the Donmar... I absolutely will.

I was there this evening. It's as brilliant as it was in the Donmar. Instant standing ovation after the lights dimmed.
Some of the intimacy has been lost, but the Wyndham's is small enough for the performances to be impactful, even from the Grand Circle. Jamie Parker clearly has a chip on his shoulder about not getting an Olivier nomination for this role, because his performance was heartshattering. I don't think I've ever heard more sniffing in a theatre than in the aftermath of "I Am The One (Reprise)".
Also, can we just have a moment of appreciation for the piece itself? When you know a show as well as I know Next to Normal, it's easy to take its technical quality for granted, but we really shouldn't. Book, music and lyrics that blend so seamlessly into one enrapturing whole are rare. Every time I see it there's another detail I catch - tonight for instance was the first time I noticed Natalie's line "You don't give up, do you?" to Henry in "Hey #2" parallels her "You give up way too easy" in their first scene. It blows me away that Natalie's entire personality and character arc (and all of her songs excepting "Superboy et al.") were rewritten during workshops, yet they got her final version this right.
The one downside was the audio mixing. The vocals were sometimes indiscernible - "Didn't I See This Movie", "Wish I Were Here" and "The Break" were especially bad. Hopefully they'll adjust as the run proceeds.
Oh, and that artwork is abysmal. I was naively hoping it might look better in person... but no, it's worse. Completely fails to capture the spirit of the show. Also, it's just f*cking ugly!

I didn’t think this could get better, yet as Being Alive said, they’ve clearly spent the last 9 months with this. The show was still so in their bodies - the actions, movements and vocally too.
I was relatively close (third row) and I didn’t feel it lost the intimacy, they’ve redone some staging to really bring it out to the audience - Natalie and Henry scenes work so well now even though they’re in relatively mostly the same places.
The chemistry between Caissie and Jamie went up about 5 notches in the final weeks of the Donmar run and it made their arc/ending even more gutting to watch, they’ve somehow managed to go up another few notches with the chemistry and honestly, it changes the show completely for me - even Marin and Jason on Broadway (who were married in real life) didn’t have this raw sexual chemistry that Caissie and Jamie have - with the right amount of affection and tenderness too, it makes it even more devastating for me. Although I still see the ending as a hopeful one for them in this production.
Elle is outstanding as always, it made me even more angry she didn’t win the Olivier.
The new staging at the beginning of I Miss The Mountains is outstanding - it works so beautifully.

I saw the show 2x at the Donmar and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth making the trip out to London this summer. I really wish they would announce a Broadway transfer one of these days. Any rumblings?

Any rumblings? Caissie posted on instagram about being one of the performers on the Broadway cruise March 31-April 4. Obviously not impossible that N2N transfers but those would be some pretty important days of previews to miss for a spring 2025 transfer.

I’m hoping it’s an early April start of previews…

Obviously not impossible that N2N transfers but those would be some pretty important days of previews to miss for a spring 2025 transfer. People pulled out of the Broadway Cruise before; I was on this year's and four of those initially announced did not take part after all: Daphne Rubin-Vega, Philippa Soo, Steven Pasquale and Eva Noblezada - the latter two because they joined Teeth and Gatsby on Broadway respectively. So there are get out clauses, in case NtN would transfer at the right time.

Those subtle changes in the direction and staging of certain bits have heightened the impact of the performances to levels that I thought impossible to improve. They're using the proscenium more, as was perhaps to be expected, and that has given them the opportunity to give certain moments more weight than before (certain parallels between the Diana/Dan and Natalie/Henry relationships for instance). To my ear, it sounded as though Jamie Parker has spent quite a bit of time with a vocal coach and now he is more solidly in command of the role, singing-wise, which makes his wonderful acting performance even more effective (especially when that solidity Dan projects starts to crumble). Everyone else in the cast was SO on point and giving it all. Clearly last night was a special one, with lots of nerves going in for the cast but certainly with an audience that really wanted to be there and to support them. I hope they continue to get the same sort of response because they truly deserve it. (Some minor sound issues, including Caissie's mic switching on a second too late a couple of times and balance to be adjusted, but hopefully those a teething problems and for a first preview I could live with them.) In brief... I can't wait to go back!

Yes, this, it was perfect. Can you tell us about it with the spoiler tag? {Spoiler - click to view}At the top of 'I miss the mountains' Diana is behind the kitchen counter and she appears to see Natalie walking back into the house after hanging out with Henry. Natalie looks elated and in love, but she can't see / doesn't make eye contact with her mum.
Diana sings the opening verse "There was a time when I flew higher / Was a time the wild girl running free would be me / Now I see her, feel the fire / Now I know she needs me there to share / I'm nowhere" all the time gazing at Natalie with the motherly love she isn't able to express.
It makes the parallel between the two and their dysfunctional mother/daughter bond so much clearer, and the payoff when we see them finally connect in 'Maybe' towards the end of Act 2 even more emotionally rewarding.

I love reading how much other people have fallen in love with this show. I am head over heels in love. I’ve just nabbed a little box for the final performance (well, final performance as of now!). The electricity in that theatre last night at a few of those powerful moments… especially I’m Alive! They did look absolutely shocked by the wild response at the end of the show, which makes sense after only having performed it to a tiny audience previously. Wearing my new tshirt and sweater with pride! (I happen to quite like the design of the artwork! Controversial!)

open.spotify.com/episode/7nnfpyhEivzQkkJ4xo4QPl?si=Ur3d1c7aQKaHxn4lz48FLA In case anyone hasn’t heard it, I just finished listening to this fantastic interview with Jack Wolfe. He’s asked some very interesting questions and the conversation between him and the host feels relaxed and friendly. He also touches on Spring Awakening as well as Magicians Elephant RSC and his screen work. 43 very enjoyable minutes

Well, that was the most incredible night I’ve had at the theatre for a while.
There’s not much I can add to the praises already heaped onto the show, so I’ll just say this - as someone who has been in love with this show since he was a teen, this production is everything I wanted it to be. Phenomenal vocals, incredible acting and direction, and a final scene that left me sobbing.
How the main four did not walk away with Oliviers (and how Jamie wasn’t even nominated!) I will never know.
Just absolute perfection all round.

Saw the first preview from the front row loved the show and thought the view was fine especially for £35 and I just noticed they have now released the front row for the rest of the run £35 midweek and £45 weekends!
