There were plenty of other heart-warming fundraisers who didn’t get the same coverage. Yes there were, but none raised 33 million pounds or were aged 100. Blanket media coverage and a professionally-run PR campaign is a big part of *why* he raised so much money. Frank Mills has just as extraordinary a story - and has had some press coverage - but without that professional media campaign he has not been nearly as successful. He is certainly not a household name (I has to Google for it).

Frnak Mills didn't fight in a war so his fundraising won't catch on. But he is white and male...

Because professional PR campaigns know exactly what narrative to push to get the most media coverage.
Most war vets don’t get referred to by their military rank constantly in civilian life.
I don’t know why people are so resistant to the idea that a professional publicist can make a difference to a charity campaign. Every major charity hires them.
Am I bursting the feel-good bubble of the story that everyone just spontaneously transformed into wonderful philanthropic human beings for a couple of weeks last year?

I have respect for him and what he did, of course. Just found it interesting, that the press spinned it like that. I remember in the beginning they made quite a song and dance about, how he shielded because of his age etc. and now they merely noted, that he went on vacation with his whole family and they were around him, when he fell ill. Maybe nothing illegal about it, but surely all not very advisable.

Does the Daily Star read this forum? (I'm not going to read the article as I don't want to give them the traffic but I'll happily post a screenshot from BBC)
