The idea of her in this show fills me with absolute dread.. but would be totally hysterical. I remember her in Millie looking terrified and out of her depth throughout.
Can you imagine her doing Blow Gabriel Blow? Hilarious!!

I mean presumably, since we were promised Mullally, then happily got Foster, producers will still want some "star power", especially when the show tours, as I don't think Anything Goes is a great seller outside London based on the show alone.

Sounds as though this is fantastic. I do hope to get to see it if I can get to London next month. How do people think it compares to the Elaine Paige Prince Edward and the Sally Ann Triplett National/Drury Lane versions though? I thought both of these were sensational. I really enjoyed the show but am quite confused by the gushing over Sutton Foster and this production. Yes she was good but in my opinion the NT/Drury Lane production was better. Sally Ann Triplett totally delivered on every scale. The dancing was more intense and to my mind the rapport between her and John Barrowman’s Billy was much warmer. In the title number here there’s a lot of arm flinging in the air and digging round in a circle and it just looks squashed and cramped on the Barbican’s stage. It looks as if the set is too big for the stage or set too far forward. The cast look like they need an extra six foot of stage to spread out and let themselves go in that number. The staging at Drury Lane looked much better, but then it is an enormous space there.

Arguably though, Sutton Foster isn't really a "star" name in the way Megan Mullally was. I doubt they sold many tickets (outside Musical Theatre fandom) on her name. So I don't think they necessarily need a big name in that role to sell it. They probably need a name in the cast, yes, but Robert Lindsay and Felicity Kendal are already doing some heavy lifting here.

I thought Sutton's performance was fine; like a very good high school performer. She did some interesting things with he rhythm of anything goes - which didn't work at all (she did it in the broadway run, too) and she just sounded tired and looked quite dead behind the eyes.
But - others' opinions I'm sure will differ as she's got more praise than not - but I think a lot of it is the excitement of having her here. I wonder when she will make her TRUE West End Debut?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought her changes of rhythm in Anything Goes were just odd. They really didn't work and were even worse on The One Show the other night - it just makes her look as if she's forgotten to sing the line! I don't agree she was dead behind the eyes as in the comedy parts she was excellent, but in the musical numbers I thought she did come across as looking tired and giving less than 100%, which was a shame given the impression I got from earlier reviews was entirely different!

Hugh Jackman has said before that he likes to keep his family together and i believe his daughter is still at school. He could have sold out the Coliseum for months if he came over with The Boy From Oz. He was wonderful as Peter Allen and a role that he seemed born to play. His stage presence was undeniable. Whilst people would pay simply to see Hugh and to a lesser extent Sutton, i wonder if The Music Man has much name recognition here. It hasnt been done in London since 95 and the 2008 Chichester Production didnt transfere as expected. I don't know if it is a show done much on the Amateur circuit.

What about Anna Jane Casey? I still remember her bringing the Royal Albert Hall to a stop with ‘tap your troubles away’ she can do brassy and can dance up a storm!

I don't agree she was dead behind the eyes as in the comedy parts she was excellent, I thought one problem was simply due to the fact she was an American performer in a British cast and the approach was different. You had Robert Lindsay giving a typically British comedy performance, very meta, letting the audience know it was Robert Lindsay deliberately giving a somewhat hammy performance, ad-libs (scripted and otherwise) - a microphone which came off when I saw it - very relaxed, in tune with the audience, whereas she was doing a more "professional" turn which you would imagine was the same every night, both script and performance.

How about when the conductor throws his baton, I wondered if that 4th wall moment was the same - when I saw it a couple of weeks ago that felt developed and in the end got a partial standing ovation?
