Did Sutton miss any of her shows? Or have either of Felicity or Robert been off, don’t think I’ve seen any reports on their understudies. I wonder what would have happened if both Sutton and Felicity were off as the only understudy listed for their roles was the same lady,

Caught Rachel for the second time last night, and I must say she's grown on me. She sounded much more well-rested than her first show, but did understandably look tired towards the end of the two dance numbers, which really makes you appreciate how much of a machine Sutton was a for powering through them without breaking a sweat. Overall, I thought Rachel sung and acted more convincingly as a night club singer, while Sutton was funnier. Still a fantastic show, I'm sure I'll be back before long. I saw it from front stalls in the most extreme right hand side seat. Still a fab view of everything but also a chance to see the actors from more of a side angle. In one of the dance numbers Sutton was stood right at the back of the stage with back to the audience. She was breathing hard and had quite a pained look on her face, then a split second before she spun to face the audience she switched her “show face” on. Eyes and teeth etc. It was like a light coming on. She made it look incredibly easy.

To give Sutton credit, Anything Goes was her first full time theatre gig in quite some time so she did very well to go from filming Younger to doing a full blown musical is impressive.

Nipped back yesterday to see this before it closes. Next week would have been ideal but I already have several shows booked in and I have a hunch that Rush tickets will be hard to get.
My Rush was Stalls Row R centre, I think one place over from where I sat last time. An excellent (if slightly distanced) view.
I was impressed that they have new posters up for the closing cast and also new programmes (I didn't buy one, but I did catch a glimpse).
I must say that Rachel is really relaxed in the role and she joins in with the improvisation and plays to the crowd. Sutton, I thought, was really thrown by all of the that and liked to stick to a routine. It was just as well for Rachel as Robert Lindsay was having a whale of a time, changing lines all over the place and improvising. They had an extended break for applause during Friendship.
Haydn Gwynne is excellent.
Only downside of where I was sat is I was surrounded by people who really just wanted to chat to each other. Especially when the orchestra was playing at the start/after the interval, but also at the end of songs. And why do half the audience need to point out to the people they're with that the conductor is wearing a sailor's hat, as if they can't see for themselves?
I am glad this is preserved for the cinema release. Such a joyous production. I'm quite happy if I don't get to return again before this closes, but who knows? Rush is always tempting!

If you watch the clips of the bows where they do the little tap reprise of AG and compare Felicity K with Haydn Gthere is a very marked difference! 😁

Your comments don't surprise me. One of the main reasons I don't like Sutton as a performer is everytime I've seen her is she is very robotic, and all teeth and jazz hands and 'look at me I'm a broadway baby'. She lacks personality and character and is just drilled into what she is doing.

The ‘look at me’ w Sutton worked amazingly in Drowsy Chaperone.
You Brits are lucky having York, IMO.

I couldn’t disagree more about Sutton F being robotic.
Every one of the 3 times I saw her in this, she ad-libbed and went along with Robert Lindsays Schlick during Friendship. In fact she seemed to revel in it.

I thought Sutton Foster was absolutely brilliant and very happy to deviate and play. An absolute tour-de-force performance.

Went back to see Rachel York today, and she's as good as Sutton was in the role.
Don't get me wrong, Sutton is my Reno and always will be. But there was something about the way Rachel was on stage that she just WAS Reno. It always felt like a performance from Sutton - a triple threat at the top of her game being exceptional, whereas Rachel just..is her. Like, she's a proper old school Broadway broad, a bit like Merman in my mind. It doesn't come as easy to her as it did to Sutton (like, you could see that the two big dance numbers took it out of her, whereas Sutton barely broke a sweat) but she's so at ease with it all!
Haydn Gwynne is so completely different to Felicity Kendal - it's more calculated than comedic. She's trying to manipulate the narrative so she comes out on top - works fine as an approach, but I think I preferred the madness of Kendal.
I'll really miss this show when it's gone...it's been just what we needed this year as theatres reopened.

Really cathartic to be in that audience.

I think that’s a bad choice. As fabulous as it is, and as much as I loved it, would I go down to London again next year to see it? No. Would Londoners go for a repeat visit with some lesser mortal as the star? Doubt it. We’ve seen it at its best with the best cast ever. Just leave it now.
I have no idea what sort of productions are usually staged in that huge, comfy theatre, but if the people at the Barbican are looking to put bums on seats perhaps they should should look a little further.

It got 5 stars across the board, it's going into cinemas, it's been sold out all summer...
I think if they cast it well again, there's no reason it shouldn't do well.

Cast it well and tour it. That was the original plan wasn’t it? I think I booked it for the Lowry! They could kill it with a good quality tour. No one wants to see half empty seats at the Barbican. It’s too good for that.

I'm surprised they're bringing it back but very intrigued with regards to casting. Maybe Megan Mullally will get her shot again?

It’s too good for that. I’d booked for The Mayflower, Southampton. Maybe a short season to kick off a tour rather than a long season would be good.

I realised that I didn't write about Rachel!
Sutton and Rachel are COMPLETELY different and both shone as Reno.
So glad I made a return visit.

If they want to bring it back: great. Just wondering if after the run this year and a cinema release they can fill the theatre for several months next year. For me it was all about Sutton Foster, wasn't interested when Mullally was in it and wouldn't book again for anyone else (I think), I have seen the best possible version.

Saw this again last night. Rachel York really gives Reno an old school Broadway feel that I just love! Really hope the show can have a longer life in the West End
