The show has never really done well on tour though has it? Wasn't there one a few years ago that ended early due to poor sales?
It's a show that does well in a big London revival with a big musical theatre star in the lead, but outside of the M25 it seems to fall a little flat.
And yes, bringing it back to the Barbican for a summer WITHOUT Sutton Foster, who was the cause of much excitement the first time around, seems a mistake. There are plenty of classic shows of a similar style that could be done and would capture the same sort of audience and excitement. Kristin Chenoweth in On the Twentieth Century perhaps? Some thing like that!

Struggling to see this do well without Sutton Foster personally. Kerry Ellis just isn't the same draw.

I do think that Foster's success in London has shown that there's a big Broadway fanbase in the UK who would love to see more Broadway stars bring their shows to London. Look at Jeremy Jordan in the Bonnie and Clyde concert too. But thank you!

Didn't know John Lahr was reviewing London productions (honestly, worth getting the free trial for this just to read the few reviews he's written). But he's a critic (one unlike others, isn't completely dazzled by Foster's technical merits) who got my sentiments on this production, and particularly why it failed to stir when televised. The Bright Side of Life "..An evening in danger of sinking Porter’s delicious wit under the story’s lame jocularity".
And on ALW Cinderella (Off-topic, but it's within the same article) : "Cinderella is mostly a torrent of unmemorable sound, a sort of Tower of Babble". "On the night I saw Cinderella, the audience gave it a standing ovation. If you’ll stand for that, you’ll stand for anything"

Tour dates seem to be fluctuating a bit. Previously Wednesday 11 May to Saturday 21 May: Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Wednesday 25 May to Saturday 4 June: Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury Now Wednesday 11 May to Sunday 15 May: Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Wednesday 18 May to Saturday 28 May: Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin However, at time of writing this, Canterbury still on sale .... marlowetheatre.com/shows/anything-goes/

According to Carly Mercedes Dyer's Instagram, rehearsals for the tour are starting next week; on a post re Anything Goes, she said to George Beet and Natalie Chua (from last year's ensemble) that she would "see them next week to start it all over again". I wonder how many of the ensemble will be returning for the tour+summer run?

Thankfully had not booked the train tickets yet. I think sometimes productions forget (or don't care) that not everyone attending lives around the corner.

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get about the laziness of the programming at the Barbican. Yes, it was very well received last year - but why bring it back for (most likely) diminished returns?

Because there will be lots of people who didn’t see it or want to see it again, and it was a huge success? Doesn’t seem that daft an idea to me.

Why wasn’t Sutton nominated for the Whatsonstage Award? Seems like she was eligible?

Probably because they knew there wasn't a hope in hells chance she would fly over to attend.

Can you imagine if she bothered flying over and then watched CHF win. The absolute insanity.

Probably because they knew there wasn't a hope in hells chance she would fly over to attend. Well the nominations are also voted for by the public are they not? So she didn’t get a nomination because not enough people voted for her.

So you’re saying What’s On Stage rigged the votes and decided not to give her a nomination even if she had more votes than other people?

I mean, realistically the WOS awards are voted for by the public and driven by social media. CHF has always had a big social media presence and a large young fanbase who would vote for her. She was always going to win because of that.
Anything Goes had a slightly older crowd who were not as engaged with social media and those who were younger were probably put off by the attempt to have Foster "cancelled" early last year.

See The Current Standings In The 2021 BroadwayWorld UK Awards; Cast Your Vote! CHF seems to have a fanbase dedicated to doing this. Broadway world posted these standings for their similar "awards" today. The category is mixed gender, and she beats everyone by miles, even the movie stars. Best Leading Performer in a New Production of a Musical Carrie Hope Fletcher - CINDERELLA - Gillian Lynne Theatre 27% Stephanie McKeon - FROZEN - Theatre Royal Drury Lane 11% Olly Dobson - BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE MUSICAL - Aldephi Theatre 11% Eddie Redmayne - CABARET - Playhouse Theatre 9% Beverley Knight - THE DRIFTERS GIRL - Garrick Theatre 8% Sutton Foster - ANYTHING GOES - Barbican 8% Jessie Buckley - CABARET - Playhouse Theatre 7% Dianne Pilkington - BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS - UK Tour 6% Tom Francis - RENT - Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester 5% Arinzé Kene - GET UP, STAND UP! And yet her social media engagement is well, well under 1%. Some basic analytics are quite revealing about this.

After watching Jodie Comer in the new episode of Killing Eve, it made me think she’d be a great Reno Sweeney. She already has the costumes for it.

So I'm very confused as to what's going on with UK tour dates. The tour website lists it as running in Dublin 18 - 28 May yet Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre says it's running 25 May - 4 June. I emailed the theatre asking if it was cancelled and they said it was still on. Are they magically doing the show in two places at once?! What is going on?

On the Anything Goes website Canterbury isn't mentioned at all, odd.

Have I missed a full cast announcement for this? Rehearsals have already started but I haven’t been able to see anywhere a full cast list
