A play written by John Godber during lockdown is to be performed at the Stephen Joseph theatre in Scarborough. It is the centrepiece of an autumn season of work that marks the theatre’s long-awaited reopening for socially distanced audiences. The play is set in a bed and breakfast in a fictional seaside town that “sounds a lot like Scarborough” It will find the playwright starring once more alongside his wife, Jane Thornton and their daughter Martha Godber. The play will explore class, memory and the “fundamentals of Britishness”, as experienced in seaside towns that “can feel a little left behind”. www.theguardian.com/stage/2020/aug/19/scarborough-stephen-joseph-theatre-reopens-for-autumn-john-godber

The playwright, his wife and their daughter! Isn't that a Peter Greenaway film?
I think I've mentioned before, five or six hundred times, that John Godber is my favourite playwright, by a Yorkshire mile.
There is actually a Sunnyside Guest House in Scarborough, as there probably is in every seaside resort, so the title may well have to change, or perhaps they'll just put a half-hidden disclaimer in the foyer. If I was going to buy naming rights, I'd definitely want sight of the script first.
On the Wednesday that theatres had to close, I was actually due to see John and Martha Godber in Angels of the North, alongside Adrian Hood, one of JG's former school pupils. (We weren't going together, he was in the play!)
All four Godbers 'starred' in Essentials, a lockdown radio drama. I'll probably get sent to Richmond Castle, but I actually think Elizabeth Godber is a better actor than her little sister, despite Martha going to LIPA, and Elizabeth concentrating more on writing, like her dad.

Much reduced capacity, of course, but this is selling so well there are now 3 matinees and 4 evening performances.
