Given the virus has yet to respond to schools opening and a couple of million students carrying virus from a to b. I wouldn't bet on October . France and Spain's current figures may be repeated here, and that leads to where Israel moved today - a three week lock down .We might contain it if the police enforced the rules with some deterrent fining, covid marshals were actually given some powers, primary care took on some of the testing , and isolation was enforced , but thats not looking likely.

I was hoping they would at least open the bar once everyone else started doing so, but nothing... (Not judging, just curious why this is the case - I do believe all smaller theatres are doing the best they can...) Yes, absolutely - I'm not judging the smaller theatres, but it is odd that some seem to be doing nothing. That's a good point. Also the layout of the theatre with a single narrow staircase might make it difficult to operate. On the other hand - there seems no practical reason why any of these theatres can't (for instance) live stream a performance from an empty auditorium (as Southwark and the Old Vic among others are doing) or create productions elsewhere (as Jermyn Street and the Park Theatre have done) or regularly put out archive recordings (as the Finborough has done). Chichester are announcing a socially distant autumn season on Sept 24th Thanks, good news - I've updated my original post to reflect this. I think that leaves the RSC as the only subsidised theatre of that size to be doing virtually nothing. As I said above, I'm not judging the smaller theatres but I am judging the RSC. Depends what the take up of a live stream is . I watched some world class cabarets in lofts and living rooms but they seem to have ended, and I doubt if they replaced anyone's normal salary. And on the other hand if you live stream your brilliant performance to a lot of people who can sit there and record it, who is going to come to the show for a lot more money later on ?
You also need something the cast can distance in too and that doesn't need too many cast, stage staff, or musicians. Play that goes wrong fits most criteria but not obviously the fight scenes , Les Mis without anyone being carried, held or lifted or belting , or Romeo quite likes Juliet from afar, and Cat , don't work so well .

Oh cheer up, can't you even try to be a bit optimistic instead of constantly assuming the worse scenarios? There is nothing whatsoever wrong with Nimax trying to open in October and they should be applauded for having a go, rather than assuming it won't happen. This board is so damn depressing sometimes. |

This is interesting. Already something new coming on. Imagine the excitement when Charles II arrived back in England with his actresses after the theatres had been closed. Maybe we are going to have new stuff, different ways of getting it to us and us to it.
Now tell me this is old production I missed..

After spending the summer undertaking a pre-planned refurbishment project, the New Vic Theatre has announced a re-opening 'housewarming' season.
And a spokesperson from Storyhouse in Chester was speaking to Jeremy Vine earlier. There will be a production of A Christmas Carol...at Christmas, funnily enough.
I know it's difficult with most staff on furlough, but maybe both, plus The Lowry, should have used the last few months to work on their respective websites!

I enjoyed Comedy of Errors a few weeks back at Storyhouse's open air theatre, so I'm quite tempted by A Christmas Carol, but I'm a bit apprehensive about going to a show indoors again. Not because I don't think the theatre will be safe, but that the prevailing public mood seems to be to not give a f*** about distancing or masks.
Fair enough doing productions now, but I don't understand how reopening is going to work as we get deeper into cold and flu season. When people inevitably start developing coughs, COVID or not, is everyone, audience/FOH/actors, going to have to isolate and get tested? That seems almost as disastrous as remaing closed.
