I was tempted by Austentatious, but the cheapest ticket is £49.10 (including booking fee) which seems rather a lot for an improvised show. |

Having looked at some of the comments on Twitter, some people had to resort to buying a pair of seats when a solo theatre goer. |

Everything I've looked at has either very minimal single seats available or nothing at all. I completely get the economics behind it and I can't blame them at all, but it won't make solo theatregoing very easy for the foreseeable future. |

I appreciate the economics but I'm drawing a line in the sand that I'm not supporting any theatre that excludes solo theatregoers. If they don't want my custom, they don't deserve my support. Good to see that in different ways The Bridge and Southwark Playhouse are being flexible on this.

I want to support them but it's proving difficult.
Jesus Christ Superstar and Sleepless only have maybe 10 top price seats per performance, halfway back, no other options. All of the Turbine productions have only 2 or 4 seats available. I understand that it needs to be financially viable for them, but it needs to be financially viable for solo patrons as well. Theatre was a massive part of my life, being a volunteer in Northampton as well as a regular customer across in the Midlands and London, and at the moment it feels like I've lost an arm! (Admittedly being alone in lockdown hasn't helped, although that's not theatreland's fault, I know!)

I think Southwark's approach is great - basically book in whatever group numbers you want and we will work it out with the perspex screens. The Bridge seems to have a mix of 1, 2 and 3 seat blocks at all price ranges. Don't know how others will handle it.
Also in lockdown solo, in a social bubble with a non-theatregoing friend so any theatre trips in the near future are either solo or with friends not in my social bubble so would need to be two single seats if we are to stick to the rules.

And even the two person blocks are a long way back and more expensive per person than the fours. All it will mean is a load of people pretending they are in a bubble with friends (or strangers) so they can afford tickets. Whether you agree with them or not, there are rules in place and if theatres want to reopen they have to find ways to help their audience comply with them. For a show like Hair, there really can’t be many households of four able to attend. It’s not exactly a show to take children to. |

Of the 3 things I have booked so far I have had to buy 2 seats for 1 show but going alone and a table for 3 when there are 2 of us for another. Only the Bridge theatre so far has been able to accommodate with 2 seats for 2 of us. I agree its all very annoying but I guess this is totally new to theatres/venues and they are doing their best which I am grateful for. I think in the coming months we will see venues adapting more when they can figure out the best way to accommodate people.

It seemed obvious at JCS last night that there were some groups of people booked together who don't live together, and quick scroll through social media suggests a few more. To be honest, I think in terms of feeling safe I'd probably feel comfortable enough doing that there if I was going with a friend who I knew had been fairly sensible, not off crawling through multiple pubs of a night etc.
Inside is a different story, though. I have a single ticket booked for Sleepless but I'm still not convinced I'll actually go. Hoping that the situation will allow me to be a bit more confident about indoor performance come October, I really want to see The Last Five Years.

Have to say it hadn't really occurred to me before I thought about the practicalities of booking that this doesn't just affect people who go to the theatre solo, but basically anyone who goes to the theatre with friends they don't live with (or are not in a bubble with). Which is presumably a pretty big proportion of the audience. As noted above this will inevitably just lead to people breaking the rules.
Only thing I've booked for so far is Last Five Years - going with a friend and we have each booked independently. I actually think a small venue who has thought this all through properly makes me more confident than a larger venue. Plus Southwark has been open as a bar for the last few weeks so has had plenty of time to work out good working practices for this.

Live at Zedel is back with some brilliant shows. Sadly, there are no provisions for the solo theatre goer, only tables of two or more. But, they are offering a live stream of each show for half the price, which I think is a huge leap forward: www.brasseriezedel.com/events/ |

Sexton & Fowler have 3 dates, but none are currently being streamed. I’m still trying to be careful about going out, having just paused my shielding. |
