"A brand new British musical has been announced – The Rhythmics.
Co-produced by Aria Entertainment and Metta Theatre, the show has been able to record a full cast album during lockdown, which is now set to be released in August.
The concept album’s cast will include Samuel Thomas, Neil McDermott, Kinny Gardner, Christopher Staines, Daniel York Loh, Kelly Price, Eleanor Kane and more."

I'm very interested to hear reports as I'm considering seeing it, but it's competing with several other prospects for too little time in my diary. Such a pain that several years ago, Southwark Playhouse bizarrely switched weekday matinees to Tuesdays as that means in effect no viable weekday matinee for me, leaving only Saturdays and if it's really 2 hours long as the website says, I'd rather not see it in the evening.

I cant believe I'm writing this, but Indecent Proposal is no longer the worst musical of the year.
I am slighlty lost for words...honestly.
They were a man down, due to a back injury, so the writer/director stepped in to read the part.
I am so keen to hear what others think of this.
There is a song in act 1 that kind of left me slack jawed. It starts in the wince inducing dialogue and then goes into a song...and... well...
There is also a 'spooky mormon hell dream' sequence in the 2nd act that must be seen to be believed.
WOW. really, there are no words...

So this is definitely NOT bad like Indecent Proposal. I actually really enjoyed a lot of elements of it, mostly when it focused on the core group of the gymnasts.
The problems here are as above, two numbers which just don’t work. They could cut those and a whole character and the piece would be much much better for it. It be daughter is also written to be very unlikeable which makes that whole sub story ineffective.
The good parts are some likeable characters, fairly good songs, and a great ending routine.
Bit of drama this afternoon, again the director stepped up to play one of the gymnasts, very well considering I might add, but at the interval we were told another actor (the romantic interest) had also taken ill. The assistant director stepped up to read/sing the part in act two. Now, the show is subtitled so it was actually quite hilarious watching her picking up the prompts through the subtitles. As well as she tried, the show did suffer in the second act and felt rather disjointed.
I see they have cancelled tonight now - the right decision I felt. I also think maybe an invite back to those of us at the matinee should be in order also (which I would happily accept)
Also nice to meet Theatre Fan (Shaun) who I was sat next to in the front row.

A question. Was the final routine meant to be funny, given what they decided to theme the routine around?
I got the impression it was meant to be moving...

I didn’t get as to the second act of yesterday’s matinee as sadly the first time ever I can recall leaving a show at Southwark at the interval. I never felt the need to leave during Indecent Proposal as just hoped in the second act they finally would give Jacqui Dankworth something to do - which they did and she lifted the show but The Rhythmics sorry but how it ever got on is beyond me.

We were talking about it today. You could go in with a 'health and social issues bingo card' and literally tick them off as you go. And not one of them was developed in any great way, just mentioned in passing. You might also want to take a neck brace with you, as you might get whiplash from the very sudden changes in tone.
{Spoiler - click to view} The majority of it was meant to be light humour (i think) but it went from casual post coital conversation, to a woman singing about her still born baby!!!
{Spoiler - click to view} At one point, 1 character calls another character Dad, and he replies something like, 'sush, someone might hear you' It had never been referred to before and was never mentioned again. HUH??

Was at the saturday matinee performance. Firstly lets deal with the Covid bit. Very good response to wearing face masks, in fact the best I have seen at any theatre recently with literally a handful of people not wearing masks. I do believe that those were exempt. So well done. Also I am usually very hot in that theatre but yesterday I was freezing. I presume this was due to the air con having to be on full blast which I understand. Maybe wear layers if you are going. As for the show I am afraid to say it was no more than OK. The story was quite fun, the cast fairly average with the exception of Noel Sullivan who I thought was rather good. But what let it down for me was the music. I thought the songs were very weak and quite similar. Cant remember a single song a day later. There is also one very strange song which another board member has mentioned earlier. It was a dream sequence which made no sense at all and could easily be cut as it added nothing to the musical. It wasnt awful but I was glad when it finished. However judging by the applause at the end the audience really liked it and there was a massive ovation from everyone. Could be lots of friends and family there or could be they really did like it.

Cancelled up to and including 16th December due to Covid cases within the company. Blimey and I was sitting in the front row on Saturday which was practically on the stage. Think I might do a test this morning.
