Perrie auditions the f*** out of it on her back staircase, whilst trying not to let her tea lights send the furry throw up in flames.

Bertie Carvel would be fantastic - the right age for this production, an Olivier and Tony winning West End and Broadway star, and I think he's playing Tony Blair on the next Crown season, right? He'll probably be tied up filming that no doubt, but he'd be a good choice if Harry doesn't do it. I imagine the Eliza will be one of the boring go-tos (Gina Beck, Alex Young, Laura Pitt Pulford...?). Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing this production again with fresh eyes. I caught it in New York in 2018, and it was good if a bit overdone and overthought. It left me somewhat cold and I think it tried to do too much. It was basically a movie on stage. I thought Sher's South Pacific and King & I were cleaner in concept and execution. This MFL had everything thrown at it.

They don’t have the room at the Coli With a seating capacity of 2,359, the London Coliseum houses the largest auditorium in the West End, hosting many spectacular productions on its huge 80ft wide stage. I also don't see the above comment when you know how big the Coliseum is. They don’t have the stage depth my dear to trundle on Professor Higgins house. They also don’t have the budget as it’s doing a limited London run followed by a UK Tour to venues that have smaller stages than the Coliseum.

I'd be happy with a smaller set. That Broadway Higgins study set was so bloated. What was the US touring set like?

With top-notch performances and direction I'd be ok with a smaller set.

I think Bertie will be too busy with both The Crown and a potential second series of Dalgliesh to commit to a run of MFL. In regards to MFL, it's not too surprising that it'll be the US touring set because that was the case with the previous Lincoln Center productions which came to London.

I also don't see the above comment when you know how big the Coliseum is. The Vivian Beaumont Theater has a thrust stage so the Broadway production was designed for a completely different stage configuration than the Coliseum. The US tour set was designed to play in regular proscenium theatres. Same thing happened with The King and I which also premiered at the Beaumont.

I was wondering it would be box office gold and a coup if they managed to get Angela Lansbury to play Mrs Higgins.

Also, the ENO website says;
"The first major West End revival of Lerner & Loewe’s much-loved musical for 21 years."
The National Theatre production closed at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on 30th August 2003. The Coliseum production opens on 7th May 2022. It still doesn't make 21 years if you take it from the opening date either, it falls a few months short. Either way, struck me as a bit weird as it's in huge writing on the landing page for the show.
Also, re: the sets again, with the show actually touring the US simultaneously to the transfer opening at the Coliseum, is it definitely just going to be a straight replica?
The sets from the US tour in the pictures and video I've just been looking at actually look rather nice. Not OTT or lavish, but certainly pretty.
This definitely has different musical arrangements than the US tour, which has a pit band of 9. The Coliseum transfer will feature the ENO Orchestra.

Wouldn't it be luverly if they could get Julie Andrews to play Mrs Higgins for the London run especially as she performed at the Coliseum in her youth. Julie has always teased she might do something again one day. I doubt it’ll ever happen but I’d move to London to be at every performance, if she did.

With top-notch performances and direction I'd be ok with a smaller set. At these prices I’d expect top notch spectacle as well as performances and direction.

Yes, I’m expecting indoor fireworks, real horses at Ascot and a pair of commemorative slippers for those prices.

I suppose it opened first at the National in March 2001, but then that's not West End. It's like Linzi Hateley in Joseph: I'm not sure if it was officially billed as such, but a lot of people saying it was her first performance as the Narrator in 30 years. Despite her last playing the role in the Pimlott version in 1998. I'm pedantic, I know. 😂

The prices are about the same as for Hairspray which was a fairly simple production and it sounds as if this is going to be far more lavish so I don't think they are that bad. Plus for those on a budget plenty of £20 and £30 seats. There will also be offers for sure nearer the time.

But yes, it´s gonna have the ENO orchestra, and I was wrong. I do wonder why the "tour orchestrator" (Josh Clayton) is credited if they´re not going to use his work.

Did the South Pacific Barbican run have a 30 piece orchestra or was it a small band?

^Yes, and well worth a watch. It's a gorgeous production. It's beautifully directed I think, and the touring cast is really good.

Did they adapt the stage version to be identical to the film, or was the film identical to the show? Because I’m watching it and it’s pretty much scene for scene the same. And Chris Cazenove seems to be doing a direct impersonation of Rex Harrison! It’s good though!
