I love Karen's take. Her "brighter than we knew it" was her signature! Too bad "Rebecca" never opened on Broadway, she would have made a fabulous Danvers.

Interesting how they all had these different signatures
Correct me if Im wrong - Betty Buckley was the one who introduced holding "HOME" which then became standard after she did it

It was just perfect for the audience to erupt into an ovation!

I too think it was Elaine. I remember her saying something in an interview along the lines of ALW not liking her holding 'home' for as long as she did because that was not the way he wrote it, but she sang it that way anyway!

They only had it done in London and New York. The 1st US Tour, Canadian, German and Australian versions kept it at normal length while all productions running simultaneously.

AHHH - that's right - I forgot about that when London had reopened to integrate the American premiere changes with Betty Buckley as Norma, she had apendecitis and Elaine Paige got rushed in to sub for her while she recuperated. Man ALW that year must've been ready for a breakdown after all the off-stage drama. I think it depends now on the singer/the actress - I believe Streisand started holding "Home" when she sang it in her concerts. As for the "MAYYYYY" at the end of With One Look - that sounds like Patti. Even reading it I can hear that screech

I once read something about difficulty of belting the E vowel versus (ay). It was too technical for me to understand let alone regurgitate. Betty Buckley did me and may. Sometimes in the same show! Elaine, Debra Byrne and Glenn did may through and through. Linda Balgord, Patti LuPone, Maria Mercedes and Karen Mason all did me. The list, understudies, and alternates goes on and on. I'd be curious if anyone ever saw South African Kate Normington as Norma. I believe she went on only once (for Elaine?) and the audience's reaction was insane given how obscure she is. This must have been circa '95.

Whether this correlates to what you read or not, I'm not sure haha, but it's down to the fact that the 'e' vowel, when sung (such as "let your soul take you where you long to beeeee", "you're gonna love.....meeeee" and, of course, "with one look, I'll be meeeee"), causes spreading, where your mouth literally spreads further than normal, especially seeing as singing sometimes requires a heightened use of the mouth, and this stretches the vocal chords but also reduces the size of the gap through which the sound escapes. Your larynx also rises and there can also be issues with your tongue and soft & hard palates. Modifying the vowel to "ay" opens everything up, lowers the larynx (which reduces tiredness in the voice) and allows more space between the back of your tongue and your throat. Some singers just decide to make the vowel modification a lot more noticeable than others!! Haha. Anyway, a bit of useless information that may or may not be interesting to anyone!

She was touring with her brother this month and playing my local town hall tonight but alas it's cancelled any one know why ? Are all the dates cancelled ? ? That's a shame. I saw a cabaret with them both at the St James Theatre last year (I think) and it was a really enjoyable night. Both are such terrific performers. I think it was the same show they were touring shame was looking forward to it ...

I have one of the cardboard adverts for Sunset Blvd (with Petula) from the London Tube, that they have on the escalators...I wrote them a nice letter as it was closing asking if I could have one, they very kindly sent one wrapped up in a massive advert they use in the tube tunnels

Michael Xavier gave a stunning performance of 'Sunset Boulevard' at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday evening as part of Magic FM's 'Magic of the Musicals' - I understand the show will be airing on Mellow Magic this Sunday evening from 6pm onwards ?

Another way she might look at it: US reviewers, with knives out for ALW reviewed it in London, and judged her miscast (fairly or unfairly). How likely is it that they'd have changed their minds on Broadway if ALW had stuck with his star? (the 'right thing to do'). She might now have the millstone round her neck of being the star that sank a surefire hit. It's sad that a performer / composer relationship broke down over this, but I put it at the door of critics. Easy to say you should face them down, but...in the real world. And now, to her, all her experiences in his shows were awful. Imagine the SB events hadn't happened: she'd still be swanning around Sydmonton fake-smiling that it's all great. For someone who calls everyone on everything, she really does have delusions about how great and full of integrity she is.
