My fully dressed niece jumping up and down in a paddling pool in the puppy pen (puppies elsewhere) at the weekend, a great grin on her face, even more so of course when she splashed the water far enough to get auntie wet outside the pen. Later hurling empty gin cans as she determinedly climbed over the floor beams in their next extension. She likes to mix it up a bit.
She's one by the way, it's less appealing if you imagine her to be 15 or something.

I gave in and, despite having no money and having promised myself I wouldn't buy anything for the rest of the year, am now awaiting the delivery of a Howard Keel face mask - if I have to wear them they can at least be a decent picture!

So today I've received a letter from a good friend, arranged to have lunch with a couple of wonderful friends for the first time in way too long and have just put together my lunch for work tomorrow. This last has a very special place in this thread as it's the first time I've done it since March - I finally get back to work tomorrow and cannot wait!

Visited the British Wildlife Centre yesterday and consequently was to be found tiptoeing around and hissy under my breath in excitement at my niece every time a red squirrel appeared.

One of my coworkers and I have become pen pals! He actually works remotely full-time anyway, so I only get to see him once a year during "normal" circumstances. He sent me antibacterial gel that smells weird.

peggs , your sweet niece has excellent taste: squirrels are the cutest! :) After a lot of deliberation, I bought a plane ticket today to travel home in August, after not seeing my family and friends for a year. I'm a bit terrified (more of the in-country travelling, busses and trains, than of the air travel part) but am so looking forward to seeing everyone, especially after 4 months of sitting in one room which is my office/living room/bedroom in one. It will be a part-working part-holidaying arrangement (a short trip to the coast included!), but it will be so lovely to see familiar faces! Also, I recently got a poster to decorate the said multi-purpose room, and the frame for it arrived yesterday. And it looks incredibly awesome! (I showed it to the flatmate who is completely unfamiliar with the reference on the poster, a band, and he was genuinely surprised how amazing it is.) It now makes me happy every time I enter the room. Small things can make such a huge difference in making a place feel like home.

Glad a 'little thing' has made a big difference, I know what it's like to pretty much exist in one room, it's amazing how a picture that makes you smile can give you a real lift.
Going home to see family, that is exciting,

I'm afraid @forrest we agreed red ones were way cuter than grey ones. Glad a 'little thing' has made a big difference, I know what it's like to pretty much exist in one room, it's amazing how a picture that makes you smile can give you a real lift. Going home to see family, that is exciting, I am pretending not to see that first sentence of your post. Your niece is young, she'll learn. ;) :) I couldn't agree more on the little things, and on seeing family. I just wish the circumstances were not so strange: even the most normal things such as giving someone a hug feel off-limits now. But, this too shall pass. (Hopefully, soon, although who knows...) |

Not this year, unfortunately, but I always love how tourists are so fascinated with the squirrels in St James' park.
When we went to Center Parcs, I bought a bag of nuts from the on-site shop. They are probably a best seller! After the first time, the squirrels would bang on the window at the same time every day. I hope they were alright during lockdown, having to fend for themselves.

Over the past few weeks I've managed to see several friends, some of whom I've not seen in over a year, which has been wonderful. Yesterday I met with one friend who I first met May 2019 and haven't seen since in order to see another friend, who I've known over 40 years and who met the other friend at the same time as me last year, in the outdoors theatre production she was in. What a wonderful day, the play was in the glorious setting of Miserden Gardens and was funny and really well done, the friend in the play had no idea we were going and the look of surprise afterwards when she saw us was priceless. We then all went to the local pub for a drink and dinner before driving home.

You’ve just reminded me that I was once held hostage by a brazen squirrel while breastfeeding my six week old daughter in the Sherwood Forest Centre Parc. I’d always had no idea why the squirrel felt it was ok to come into our chalet, but now I have an inkling! |

On a day when many of us may be in need of a little positivity, I hope this helps.  A neon sign won't make Leeds Playhouse world-famous, but there's no shame in being the sixth best theatre in Yorkshire. 😉 (I had to ask, obvs, but older TB members will remember this as a line from the biggest hit by Chumbawamba, who I believe were a popular music group from the days of yore. 🙂) |

My mood brighteners of the day: Rob Thomas (don't judge, I love his voice, and the first Matchbox 20 album brings me back to the days of yo... I mean high school) and the fact that Lidl sells its mini stollens, which are possibly my favourite thing to eat with a cup of coffee in December, in the UK too (also please don't judge, I love stollen in all shapes and sizes, but am sometimes too lazy to make my own). 2 boxes of Lidl mini stollen currently in my cupboard. Will they last until Christmas? Hell no! Won't even last the week. |

alece10, you're ahead of me: I considered buying some but didn't, for that exact reason. They would be gone by the weekend. Plus, I am trying to keep some traditions December exclusive. Although, the way this month is going for the obvious reasons, I might be going back to Lidl soon... (The bad thing is it's on one of my usual walking routes...)

I adore mince pies and Christmas cake but usually keep them exclusively for Dec as a treat. However I'm going to our brand new Lidl tomorrow so who knows what will fall into my trolley? 😁

The last treat I bought for myself was a box of Guylian seashells. I figured they'd last about three days. Four hours and two thirds of the box later I said "screw it" and gave up any pretence of trying to ration myself.
