Am absolutely disgusted by SouthWesternRailway, one of the worst train companies in the world anyway. I have over £70 worth of Advance tickets booked to get to and from now cancelled shows. Their policy is... no refunds. You can change the date of travel, utterly useless when we don't know when things are being rescheduled to never mind London going into lockdown. Sorry for the rant but it's profiteering during a crisis and I can't stand it, or afford it! www.southwesternrailway.com/travelling-with-us/coronavirus-travel-information

I think that is a more national policy - the same applies to advance tickets on Avanti, and I am sure on other lines too.

same with Scotrail, I'm supposed to be in Inverness tomorrow, emailed earlier in the week to say I can swap it for future travel.

I misread this thread as Time Travel During Coronavirus! Finally, I thought, a thread I can invest in

SouthEastern Railway are doing the right thing.
"Under normal circumstances Advance tickets are not refundable, but we have temporarily waived this rule and Advance tickets will now be fully refundable and we will not charge you an admin fee for this service."

I'm psyching myself up for what I assume is going to be a big argument with SouthWesternRailway after lunch. I appreciate it isn't the customer services fault but the lack of compassion from the higher ups to customers is astonishing.

Although all companies have to carefully manage their cashflow at a time when nobody knows when some kind of normality will return, even railway monopolies should remember that consumers have long memories. We may have fewer options than in a truly free market, but many of us can travel from A to B by other means, or simply not make a journey.
I don't have any inside knowledge, but I suspect South Western's current management don't care...because they don't care. The franchise was on its knees long before Covid, and I would think the chances of it surviving such a collapse in revenue is somewhere between nil in zero.
So although their inflexibility is clearly wrong, and out of kilter with many other TOCs, 'a change is gonna come', which I hope is some consolation.

Well I'm adding Avanti to the list of train companies I am never using again. Point blank refusing to refund advance tickets. Absolutely insane. Yet they cannot answer when asked how we are meant to rebook considering this could go on for months!

Fantastic! I was advised to collect them and post them to their customer services
