I’ve just read it’s nearly three hours long. I don’t know what to say. Also, is there a link to the Daily Mail article? It was just a small article tucked in with one of the columnists. Looks like the premiere in New York will still go ahead on 16th December.

The producers are feline worried about this.Paws for thought whilst they try to (cat)nip the CGI problems in the bud. This film looks like a disaster, fur goodness sake.

So now it’s going head to head with Star Wars. Sounds like a move to accommodate a face saving excuse for an under performance. I still hope this is good though, and in fairness working to the very last minute isn’t always a bad thing - The Return of The King I believe was finished the very morning of its world premiere and went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

Peter Jackson is generally tinkering with his movies right up until the 11th hour - thus is the benefit of modern digital distribution. Many contemporary directors work that was all through the film making process actually. As you say @kevinuk it doesn’t necessarily mean one thing or another. And it way always scheduled against Star Wars wasn’t it? Assume they have some market research to suggest that it may benefit from audiences turned off by sci-fi. Or those that get turned away by full screenings of The Last Jedi?

I believe it was originally scheduled to be released a week or so before Star Wars, presumably as that week’s biggest release. Now it comes out the day after Star Wars, so all publicity will be around that now (being the last in the saga) and how much it collects at the box office.
So basically Cats now has zero chance of being a box office #1, but that doesn’t mean no one will see Cats - I plan on seeing both - but where there is a shared audience more will be inclined to see Star Wars first I’d have thought.
But it’s an odd (if not bold) move to go head to head with what will be the most anticipated movie of the year. Which makes me wonder if they’ve done it deliberately so that if it does under perform, they can say “Who could win against Star Wars?”
Also, wasn't there talk of seeing how Cats performed before Sunset went into production, or am I making that up? Anyway, I find stranger ALW is still working on the music, as presumably the OST is already locked in. Although saying that it wouldn’t be ALW if he wasn’t changing something after the cast recording had been done!

Whilst I’d say Cats always had zero chance of being box office number one i am sure the studios aren’t trying to bury it either. And finishing off the scoring to accompany last minute editing changes or the end credit sequence wouldn’t effect the music on the soundtrack which, as you say is long since locked in for physical release.

The trailer reminds me for some reason of those stuffed animals you see in a museum preserved by a taxidermist...very creepy and macabre. Sure you weren’t watching ‘Loose Women’? Brilliant!

Well this is all very confusing. Tinkering with the CGI? ALW in Abbey Road constantly re-mixing and re-recording bits of the score? I don't understand a huge amount about how films are made. But surely both of these things are completely impossible when it’s due for release in less than three weeks? I mean how soon up to a film’s release can you change it? They have SUCH long production times I always thought would be set in (Sharon) stone for months before release?
That said of course ALW famously recorded the whole of Love Never Dies (with Barrowman?) then decided he hated it and did the whole lot again. Does anyone happen to know if he is credited as orchestrator for the film? The style in the trailers is very different from the stage show and I wonder if a) was in fact orchestrated by someone else, b) ALW did it and things it's wonderful, or c) ALW did it as he thinks it's the style people want to hear in a movie but is somewhat undecided himself. Hence the alleged tinkering.
As for are they expecting it to be a hit? I guess they are expecting it to do about as well as Evita or Phantom did? Although of course Evita had Madonna (and was very good). I mean how well did they do? I have no idea!
God knows re Sunset - if I had a pound for every time they were definitely about to make it. Glenn Close is now farcically wrong for it though. Don't even get me started etc etc.....

I suppose it depends the director's agreement with the studio and what the delivery date is. Some movies are handed into a studio and sat on for months (even years) before release, whereas some directors (such as Peter Jackson has only completed a movie on the day of the premiere.
Cats has a budget of $80 million so presumably they need it to be bigger than Evita (which Wikipedia tells me made $140 million). A movie seems to only be considered a hit if the studio makes the money back from the domestic gross, so they must be hoping for $160m in North America alone.

A budget of £80 million doesnt seem that much to me, given the names in it and the amount of CGI they are doing. With a small budget like that, they already know that its not going to be a smash hit that everyone will rush to see. Its a niche market.

Today it was advertised across the sides of lots of buses and there's also a tv advert for it. The marketing has begun.
But if the set is cat sized, why is that cat flap so damn big??

This tends to happen only for huge releases like Marvel/Star Wars films. A programmer usually sees the film between a month to 3 months before its release date to allow time to decide if it’ll work in their cinema.

Well, there's a massive CATS press junket here scheduled for the 12th, with a screening the night before, so the clock must be ticking ....

Our fluff ball would never go through hers because her perception was she wouldn’t fit. Perhaps she advised them on the movie cat flap leading it to be a cat flap of sufficient size?

OK this is getting daft now - why is the CD still not available (even with a preorder date) on Amazon?!
And STILL nothing on Apple Music, not even a track listing.
Evita and Phantom were there weeks (?months) before....

There’s an interview with Hooper in today’s Times. In it, he says that ‘with just weeks to go until release’ (so the interview must’ve happened in the last week or 2) there are approx. 2500 people still working on the visual effects. I don’t know anything about making a film, but that sounds like a very bad situation. In the interview he also says that the Golden Globes panel had to be shown an unfinished version of the film.

100 minutes seem short for a film version of this then again I guess you could cut a lot of songs out and not worrying about it affecting the plot because there isn't much there to begin with.

to be working on a film still at this late stage is cause for anxiety. Will we recognise it at all, or will it have been so reimagined?
