Reading the reports of Liam Scarlett being suspended- he was due to start choreographing a ROH production of Oklahoma!... did I miss this being announced?!

By the sounds of it, it was scrapped before it really got off the ground. I don’t think there had been any public announcements, although high tier ROH members may have been privy.

Scarlett was supposed to be choreographing a piece for the Royal Ballet next month but back in the autumn it was announced as "postponed". Presumably these allegations are the reason for its postponement, although there was no indication of that at the time. However that work was supposed to be a new ballet work; certainly not Oklahoma. I've not come across any rumours of the ROH doing a production of Oklahoma & I'd be very surprised if they did. Unlike ENO, ON & WNO, I cannot recall the ROH having ever staged a musical. They rarely even do operetta. I wonder if the articles have got a bit muddled and Oklahoma would have been for a different company.

They co-produced a production of Sweeney Todd, but agree I couldn’t see them doing Oklahoma!

They co-produced a production of Sweeney Todd, but agree I couldn’t see them doing Oklahoma! Which Sondheim despised and banned any future performances of. After ROH it was due to put on at, I think Houston Opera but it couldn't so they hired the excellent David Mcvicar production from Opera North. If Sondheim had seen the ROH studio theatre production of Woods I'm sure he would of banned that as well

Yes those productions were awful.
Strange he hated them though- he seems to love anything that’s staged and sit there crying throughout!

I don’t think it was going to be a staging of the musical - it would have been an entirely new ballet piece based on the same story. Not sure whether they would’ve been planning to use the R&H music or not.
