Watching the Evita concert tonight and it struck me that Matt Rawle would make a great Arnaud du Thil if this got revived...

Not sure if this will be in the 2024 season, but they are workshopping again!

I'd love this to happen, and with Matt Rawle. Immaybe a bit obvious but I think Jamie muscato would make a great Martin Guerre, he'd sing the sh*t out of the score and act it well too

They’ve been workshopping this for about 78 years.

Yes, they can’t quite work out how to make a story with no central mystery mysterious enough. Look, I’m Martin Guerre….yes we know and we know that he isn’t, what else have you got? Weirdo with a doll? Hmmm. Protestants vs Catholics? Nahhh. Setting fire to the stage? Not any more…I can listen to it til the cows come home, but until they solve the problem with the central dynamic I’m not sure I’d schlepp to the big smoke for it.

Honestly I wish they'd just do the original version.

Does anyone know why Rebecca Lock is on the OLC rather than Juliette Caton? I've always wondered, since Juliette was the lead and I'm all the promos like the above video.

I dont know why, but having seen them both a few times, Rebecca Locke was by far the stronger singer of the two Bertrandes. Locke was the standby/Alternate if i remember correctly, but dont quote me on that.

I think they just realised that Lock was considerably stronger vocally. We went several times in the first few weeks and it was a bit of a slog. Moments of genius hidden in a 3 hour plus show. The stomping ✔️ Martin Guerre ✔️ All I Know 🔥 Tell Me To Go 🔥 and Bethlehem 🎄….but my God there were boring stretches of blah exposition and people that just were not interesting fleshing out the good bits. Stephen Clark did what he could by version 3 but it must’ve been a battle to get there.

Does anyone remember seeing Jerome Pradon in this?

I also want to know why Caton wasn’t on the recording.. it can’t be that her vocals were inferior surely? I like her voice

You know what Cameron is like with a new toy. As soon as he gets a better one…whoosh!

I might get shot down in flames for this but I really, truly can't stand Rebecca Lock's voice on the OLC. I like her usually but I find her vocals on it really jarring, so I'd have preferred Juliette (who sounded fine to me from everything I've heard). Bit of a kick in the teeth to be pushed out from the recording! I mean, they kept Iain Glen who was fine but certainly isn't the strongest singer they could have used, if that was their reasoning for Bertrande.

I agree - Glen is a fine actor but a pretty average singer.

Wasn't Juliette Caton someone's daughter/wife/otherwise a nepobaby, so there was lots of criticism that she only got the role because of her connections while Rebecca Lock felt more like the "deserving one"? It's all so long in the past and I can't stand this musical, so I can't be sure, but I seem to remember that bit.

I remember seeing Juliette Caton and enjoyed her performance - does anyone know what she’s been up to since?
Matt Rawle was stunning in the lead role and has been fantastic in everything I’ve seen him in since.

I didn’t see that concert - I did see him in the production at the Adelphi though. Hope to see him again soon.

Yes, I saw him at the Adelphi and thought he was good - I also saw him in the title role in Martin Guerre. I've always rated him, but he wasn't on his A-game for the concert sadly.

Juliette has been a vocal coach for 25 years apparently. I saw the show in all its incarnations at the Prince Edward quite a lot from the beginning. Of Juliette and Iain, I preferred her vocally. Makes me think of the alternate Arnaud, Glyn Kerslake. I once saw him on the wednesday doing main Enjolras at Les Mis and the day after as Arnaud. Apparently he once did also u/s Valjean in the same week he did Arnaud and Enjolras. Anyway, he was a much superior Arnaud I thought. Matt Rawle was also a fantastic newcomer, and later on the young David Shannon as Guillaume (even better than Jerome Pradon in my view). Those were the days!
