This forum is the perfect place to talk about our obsessions and quirky ways when it comes to theatre. I'm loving the tickets thread today.
From a thread on the old forum about programme storage, I started buying the Comic Stor-folio boxes for my programme collection, and I have to say I'm loving them. They're simply perfect for the job of keeping my children safe in their little boxes. I was recently irked though when I saw that Amazon no longer sell them directly, and the cheapest price for one, is £24 including postage from third party sellers! Nevertheless, I did find a good deal on eBay for 5, so my addiction remains to be topped up for the time being.
This does have its drawbacks however, as now I am on the lookout for something similar to store my photo brochures, which vary in size. So I was wondering, what do other people use? And how else do similar theatre going folk keep their collections of programmes?

IKEA do a good range of storage boxes including some big transparent plastic ones with snap lids which are waterproof and would protect your precious babies in the event of flood.  |

Ooh I need to get on this! Mine are currently kept in big cardboard boxes under my bed with the year written on the top, but I hadn't thought about the possibility of flooding!

Had damp and therefore mould in my room once, I think I was much more concerned when I realised this had reached my programmes boxes than my shoes, possibly that sums up my priorities rather alarmingly  |

I recently sorted my collection. Great fun, reminding myself what I've seen. All in plastic stackable boxes now.
Get the shallow ones though. The deep ones are way too heavy when full.

Yups, those are the ones. They do nicer looking cardboard storage boxes too, but they can be quite expensive and no protection from damp or insects and moths that like to EAT OLD PAPER!  |

I used to have mine stored in a couple of suitcase in the loft, but last year bought a lot of posh foolscap box files so I could have them available for browsing.
After much re-arranging our bookshelves I now have a row of theatre box files so that I can get to my programmes easily and have much enjoyed going through them. Unlike so many on the Board I have never stored them in an orderly fashion though, so the next step is to start grouping them into years (or at least decades to start with).
It's a bit out of hand really, but I so enjoy going back through them and finding people who weren't famous then, but have since become well known. And they bring back nice memories too. I have found though, that after 40 years of theatre going I remember the good ones and the bad ones, but there are some in the middle range that for the life of me I can't remember much about at all.

Mine are all currently piled up on a high shelf, so flood damage shouldn't effect it at the moment bar the apocalypse... though I will need a new storage idea soon or the shelf may collapse from the heaviness  |

Mine were all sorted alphabetically (and then chronologically for show repeats) but I had to transfer them rapidly from blanket box to cupboard recently and they're now just stacked in there randomly. A rainy day project, methinks!

In boxes in the loft, except the special ones which live in a trunk downstairs. And some of the special ones* only made it down a year or two ago when I desperately wanted to get my 1974 Superstar programme autographed by ALW at one of the TV recordings, and I had to rifle through them all to find it. (He did sign it for me, and the warm up bloke made a joke out of my 55p ticket inside!)
Like others, I had almost forgotten I'd seen some of the stuff. Must have been bad...!
Some shows seemed like yesterday.
And some of the performers I'd seen came as a surprise. (Tom Hollander as Mack the Knife at the Donmar, Sarah Parish in Nine, also at the Donmar...)
I really must get sorting them out. Thank you for reminding me!
(*The special ones are my top shows of all time, and many of them contain an autograph or two!)

I have three piles of programmes in a cupboard: One with the bigger souvenir brochures, one with the smaller programmes and a third one with my few Playbills. The latter one is far less impressive though. There's still room for more, but I need to start thinking about alternatives soon.

Mine used to be lovingly displayed on a shelf but it got overwhelmed and when I moved they got relegated to a box under the spare bed. I always read everyone's bio and if they've been in something I've seen out comes the big box to see if I've seen them before. Current leader is Marti Pellow (which is shameful as I can't stand him -sorry if you love him)

I have so many programmes that I'm sorry to say that they have to go. However I'm in the process of cataloging them before I get rid of them (I shall keep some special and autographed ones). I'm making a list of every play I've seen with details of when and where I saw it, every actor with what I've seen them in, role played and when and where. I also list every thing I see in date order by year. All of this is going on spreadsheets. Also included are all the ballets and operas I've seen. Needless to say this is taking me quite a time to do but space is becoming a premium.

Guys i dont know if anyone else does this, but mine are all blue tacked to the wall in my bedroom or run along the back of my sofa. I also pin all my theatre leaflets from the shows I've seen at the top of the wall too! I love it!

I also pin all my theatre leaflets from the shows I've seen at the top of the wall too! I love it! When leaflets were made of paper, not card, and they weren't the folded variety, I made a collage of them, featuring all the shows I'd been to, on a rather boring, flat door of an under the stairs cupboard. I then added a clear varnish over the top, and added a piece of stained moulding all the way round. It used to look rather good, I thought. I'd forgotten all about it until you reminded me...! |

When I worked in an old office building, where they didn't care about the state of the walls, I used to pick up any free flyers or adverts for anything I had seen and blue tack them to the wall by my desk.
I worked there for only 5 years, but by the time we left I had a lovely bright wall with lots of nice memories.
Regrettably we moved 5 years ago to a new open plan office where there is nowhere to stick things up and we wouldn't be allowed to if there was. Very boring.

Actually, you might be pleased to know that you'd inspired me on this front, so tickets in hand and Pritt Stick at the ready, I settled down while I had the house to myself. Now it'd been so long since I'd got it out that the end had completely dried up, so it was neither use nor ornament... Just then, mother walked through the front door, spotting what I'd been trying to do. "I hope you're not playing with that thing again," she bellowed. "The last time you had that out, you made a mess all over the sofa and it took me weeks to get the marks off the upholstery." So thanks for that little tip, Burly. Next time keep your good ideas to yourself.  |

I'm loving this thread too. My 'best' programmes are in box files, and more recent ones are in other cardboard boxes. Not sure if I want to go plastic (!) but do see potential benefit. I have the same problem as lots of us - need more space. I keep buying programmes and can't throw any out. Need a bigger house!!
Love the idea of spreadsheet info but no time to do it. Need my own archivist really!!

I have such an obsession that they must make it home in the same condition I bought them in, flat, no foldings. My other half isn't even allowed to look at them for fear he may put fingerprints on the black pages... Oh the shame! We should use this thread as a show and tell! If I were more savvy with these things I might start it off. |
