You really think they *wanted* that hugely intrusive hullabaloo over their wedding?! I don't know, but you certainly seem to have some inside knowledge into their brains that the rest of us aren't privy to! The fact is that there was nothing legally stopping them from eloping or just doing something private without press attention (like Zara Tindall did) - they aren't in the direct line of succession so it wasn't the wedding of a future King. They chose not to, they even chose to give an engagement interview, so yes they did choose to deal with the media circus that rightly or wrongly comes with all of that. I follow press behaviour (been interested in press behaviour/misbehaviour and regulation since I did A Level Media Studies - in 1999-2000, so there was still a hell of a lot of Diana stuff in the press), so I actually pay attention to this stuff. It's not hard to figure out when press coverage is wanted and when it's not - when painful personal and family history is being raked over while the person at the centre of it is asking the press to show some restraint, and then resorts to legal action, it is clearly not wanted. All it takes is empathy, not mind reading, to work that out. It's also not hard to figure out just how outraged the press would have been had he eloped - take what is happening now, and times it by 10. Harry is not Zara Tindall - she is not Princess Diana's child, and does not hold the press and public's fascination is the same way that William and Harry do. She's also not a HRH. Harry has made it extremely clear over the years that he hates the press attention. He has, up until now, accepted it as an inescapable 'part of the job' and tried to manage it the same way the other Royals do. He has actually said in the past - long before he met Megan - that he wanted out of the Royal family because he hates it so much, but decided to try and carve out a meaningful role for himself as a working Royal instead. He's now at the point that he's actually risking a rupture with his family over it, and is taking a massive press beating for daring to push back at it. For anyone who pays attention to this stuff - most people don't pay attention, they barely read past the headlines - there can be no question that Harry would have preferred to live a quiet private life. He has understood that he can't - that it causes exactly the reaction we are seeing now both from the press and from the Royal establishment. Royal Weddings cause huge leaps in popularity for the Royal Family. People feel entitled to access to them. Not being invited to a Royal Wedding is like not being invited to a family wedding - it's a snub of epic proportions.

That is surely an irrelevance though if he does hate the press and publicity as much as you say. The fact is that they did have a choice as to how they married, they didn't have to appease the press, but they chose to do so.

HRH must still be furious with Harry for making this public the way he did last wed Must she? Her statement is rather interesting, in terms of how it's worded: as royal statements go, it is strikingly personal, and reads far more like it comes from a grandmother who is deeply concerned about the well-being of her grandson and his family, rather than from a monarch representing the institution of the crown.

Andrew's two girls work and they are both blood princesses and HRHs and are only two and three places below Harry in the pecking order so what is wrong with Harry and Meghan earning a living.
Maybe Meghan will run for President in the future then there would be no worry about security costs.

They tried to play by the Royal press-management rules. They found they couldn’t - the press hostility is simply too much for them to live with. They have decided to change how they live their lives as a consequence of that attempt failing. We all occasionally try to follow the way things have always been done because we don’t want to rock the boat and make other people unhappy.

And the BBC don't want the Royal wedding this year, though that may be down to Andrew being toxic They didn't show the other Chuckle Sister's one either. There's not the interest in Andrew and Fergie's kids that there is in Charles and Diana's. Part of that is due to their non-public roles - it was always known that they weren't going to be 'Senior Royals' - but a large part of it is down to the tragedy industry around Diana's death. If she was still alive, and everyone had gotten used to her being the ex-wife of Charlie-boy and mother of the future King who does some charity work and provides occasional embarrassing gossip - like Fergie does - then the situation would undoubtedly be different. She would probably have re-married - maybe even more than once, who knows? - by now. She'd be coming up to 59 this year. People forget that the press were already turning sour on her again at the time of her death - in fact the news of her death broke after the papers had gone to press, so people woke up to it with papers featuring pap pictures and nasty opinion pieces about her. She certainly wouldn't be considered the almost-Saintly figure that she became in the aftermath of her death. And I doubt the fascination with Harry and William would be quite so intense - or experienced as so intrusive and distressing by Harry.

Ive always been a big fan of the lovely Bea and was hoping for a June wedding in Windsor on the scale of Megan and Harry s wedding .... hopefully with similar weather...
but it seems Prince Andrew's scandalous social life has put the mockers on all that .....

As much as I think it’s up to Harry and Meghan to live their life the way they want, I just think they’ve done a really p*ss poor job of the way they’ve gone about it, and it’s not been a good look. I don’t think anyone comes out of this looking particularly good other than the Queen. Good on them if they want to earn their own money in their own way, but they’re literally going to be trading off their Sussex Royal brand, and the millions and millions of dollars/pounds they’ll earn will only be possible because of that, and when being a member of the RF is about performing a duty to the country and people that to me doesn’t seem right! I can see why the Queen has struck a conciliatory note but it’s absolutely in the RF’s interests right now to not rock the boat any more.
The press has been pretty savage to Meghan and there’s obviously undercurrents of racism from some factions. I do think though that it’s wrong to see commentators (in the US press especially) tying to say that they were hounded out of Britain solely because of racism! I don’t think that’s true .... the British public have been overwhelmingly supportive of them. I think if anything the press is guilty of being misogynistic and sexist when it comes to Meghan. They were the same with Kate at first also, and used to be brutal about Camilla! But they’ve also been positive at times too, yet it seems whenever there has been positivity it’s swiftly followed by Harry and Meghan doing something to undercut that.
The whole thing’s a mess really.

Diana would still have remained an icon and would likely have aged well. She'd have still had a lot of interest in her and might have been a good sounding board to the likes of Meghan.

We all occasionally try to follow the way things have always been done because we don’t want to rock the boat and make other people unhappy. It’ll be really interesting to see how they become financially independent without any media/press publicity at all, wherever they choose to live, and in Harry’s case without trading on his royal credentials. He doesn’t seem to have much on his CV that doesn’t involve his royal status. I wouldn’t be surprised if Meghan stays permanently in the States and /or Canada, being financially independent, which she is more than capable of , but no doubt with the aid of media publicity which they apparently despise. Surely media publicity is essential in her line of work? Harry will join her, returning to the UK occasionally to “earn” his royal funding by doing invaluable duties like reading out rugby tournament draws ..... interestingly to a great media fanfare, the despised media praising his return to royal duties after his well earned Christmas break. Sorry, but in my estimation this was just an hour or so of “work” , the first in months, and hardly essential ..... some of us had no break whatsoever from work over Christmas and new year , and still haven’t. I can well understand them wanting to live out of the limelight and be financially independent, no harm in that . But will they , can they, actually do it ? No use at all of the media they despise, no use of Tax payers money (UK or Canada) or Duchy of Cornwall funding, no earning through royal credentials, or will they choose the half and half option , which would seem very hypocritical and I doubt would prove to be popular .

It’s been confirmed that Harry and Meghan will no longer be known as HRH but will retain Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

They are also repaying the money used for the external and foundation renovations for Frogmore Cottage (they paid for the interior decorating and and fixtures themselves).
It's pretty sleazy that the Queen leased for them them a dilapidated building as a "wedding present" and the Sovereign grant paid for its restoration. They(/Prince Charles) will have effectively paid for renovating the heap they only lived in for a year.
The Queen should have given them a home that was already in good working order.

Should we conclude the Queen is a racist exercising her white privilege at great personal discomfort to a vulnerable new mother.
Or, given they don't need the place, perhaps she should have got them a toaster instead.

So the Queen has found a way to bilk her granddaughter in law for the cost of renovating one of her own houses (a Grade II listed royal property which she would have had to renovate sooner of later anyway), despite granddaughter not living in it.
You don’t get to be one of the richest women in the world without being savvy, got to hand it to her.

Someone thought they saw them on the Strictly tour but it was Alex Scott and Neil Jones.

They were going to live in Kensington Palace which would have been refurbished for them at even greater expense, but Meghan and Harry CHOSE not to live there and CHOSE to move out of London! And Frogmore cost millions to renovate on the understanding THAT HARRY AND MEGHAN would be living there! A bit of a stretch to say the Queen has been sleazy! 😂 And I’d imagine the Queen didn’t even ask for the costs of the refurbishment to be repaid, but rather M&H chose to do so because they know there’s been a lot of public outcry at public money being used for it.

The Queen pays for refurbishments of buildings at Sandringham because she owns Sandringham. Windsor is covered by the Sovereign Grant. So she didn’t pay for the refurbishment of Frogmore cottage, even though The Queen is responsible for the management of dilapidated buildings on that estate, it was a good excuse to fix up the crappy building with the excuse that it will be leased for Harry.
Now Harry (ie his father) is having to pay for that “present”. Gee, thanks, Queenie.

Having already declined the Kensington address, any thoughts on why they decided not to live at Frogmore until after the renovation?

I suppose the question is whether anyone’s going to be interested in them if they’re not HRH any more? Surely the fascination only exists because they are Royal, so when the hue and cry dies down from this what’s left? A bloke who was in the army and an actress from a tv series no one had heard of? Once outside of the “golden circle” there’s nothing. They’re effectively going down the Fergie route and look what she had to resort to, legitimately flogging Ocean Spray cranberry juice and Weightwatchers on US tv, and illegitimately flogging access her ex husband (then a member of that golden circle) for cash.
It will be an interesting experiment, but they’ll be back. Or rather HE’LL be back in a few years with or without Meghan.
