Being a disgrace to the BRF (the most vile grifters on the planet) is rather a case of water finding its own level.
The whole family is utter trash.

Well, there is a big difference between inviting the press in and the press intruding on you uninvited and being fed stories and (potentially) lies by your family or their employees to distract from other family drama? At least in this way they have control over what is being said and can put their story across. I doubt I'll be spending 6 hours watching it but I'm sure lots of people will, either cos they are interested or because they are trying to find new fodder to hate on them with. LOL A story is exactly what they are presenting. It isn't anything close to the truth. It is just a story sold to make them millions.

The BRF lie and censor/threaten the press a million times more than Harry and Meghan. The lies they tell and the utter corruption and gaslighting on a national scale with the support of a biased and controlled press is not even in the same league as two individuals doing their own podcast and streaming show.
The way the BRF abused and exploited Harry and Meghan is off the charts evil. The Jason Knauf scandal alone should be front page stuff, especially in light of the C4 press censorship and false arrest issue. Even the recent scandals with William’s godmother - it’s not just her racism, but the fact the BRF instantly fired an 80 something member of their own family after 60 years of service just to counter bad press. Those people are utterly ruthless.
Even the disaster of Will and Kate’s current US tour and all the scandal and naked self serving nature of Earth prize doesn’t get 1/100 the salivating press coverage that “Meghan Markle wears nail varnish/eats avocados/breathes” got.

Oh please.... and whatever else is put out there and peddled by the Royals is super close to the truth??? C'mon, it's all a circus, I was fine with it when the queen was still alive, let the old woman finish her life's work, but now it's really time to get rid of that circus show. As for Harry and Meghan making millions, so what? There are millions made by the press off their backs anyway with stupid stories, they might as well cash in on it themselves. And as I said, there is a huge difference between giving an interview (or making a stupidly long docu series) and people taking long lens pictures of you in your garden, rummaging through you garbage and listening into your private conversation, etc. It's their lives, they can share however much they want, but everything else is not stuff we are automatically entitled to (unless it's criminal or immoral) and I am of the same opinion of any Royal or other celeb.

I’m kind of sat in the middle. I’m not on the royal families side (I passively enjoy the rituals and old traditions but the people inside it feel like a soap opera at the best of times). I don’t doubt that a lot of people within the firm (both the family and the upper ranks of the staff) can be corrupt, outdated and both casually and directly racist, sexist etc.
Meghan probably went in with an American Disney-fied understanding of being a royal, and wasn’t really prepared for the responsibilities and archaic rules and media scrutiny. I totally understand why she would want out (and also give Harry the excuse to duck out, which he’s probably always wanted to do)
But what bothers me about this whole thing is how publicist-driven this all feels. They wanted out of being royals, but still wanted elements of being minor royals (the security, their child being in line to the throne etc.), and also immediately began to monetise the drama.
They obviously have issues with the family, but them releasing cattily-named books, big exclusive interviews with America’s sweetheart Oprah, and a multi-episode Netflix documentary series feels very like making their (probably valid) issues into a brand. It feels all very insincere (and tbh very American, like making a reality show out of your life)

Good for them if they managed to get Netflix to part with that much cash for so little content! The fact that the British media have got all the usual nauseating sycophants like Paul Burrell and Camilla Tominey telling us how wrong H&M are for exploiting Diana's name (we're the only one's allowed to pig out at that trough!) shows they're on the right track.

I don’t exactly disagree because they do feel very celeb- and PR-driven, but there are Neo Nazi terrorists in prison here in England right now for talking about killing Harry for being a race traitor. (Their conviction got almost no press coverage, which is pretty shocking considering how many random everyday things Meghan did became headline news.) They are a major, major terrorism target, stoked by the insane press war against them. I mean Archie had credible death threats when he was a newborn, Meghan got sent suspected anthrax.
Did you see the statement the Met Police former counter-terrorism chief recently made about them?
They clearly need security, it’s not some status symbol. The kind of security they need is expensive. I’d do a tacky Netflix show too if if was the only way to ensure my baby wasn’t murdered by Neo Nazis.

Oxfordsimon and Burley Bear have got a klaxon that goes off when someone posts about Megan Markle. They are so quick on the subject.
I have searched settings but I can’t find the button. Either a mods thing option or very strong feelings on the subject

It feels all very insincere (and tbh very American, like making a reality show out of your life) The media (and 'palace officials') are making their lives a reality show... H&M are just choosing to be the producers of their own lives.

I’m always surprised how certain people seem to be of their positions on this sort of thing and also how they judge the people involved and then refuse to consider any different….we don’t know Harry and Meghan. You can choose not to watch the documentary. I think with what came out after Diana “left” the royal family it’s fair to say there was a lot that we didn’t know in real time (Camilla, Diana’s bulimia, Diana’s affairs etc etc) so it’s probably fair to assume that the “version” we saw of the royals when Meghan was “in the firm” probably wasn’t the true picture either! I never thought the press would take to Meghan…a woman who is successful in her own right (and rich) who actually has opinions…. They much prefer Kate who dressed her kids like they were in the 50s and tows the line like a good wife!

To be fair, one could just as easily and just as accurately say “Does SamuelWhiskers have a defend Meghan klaxon that goes off whenever anyone disses her.” Obviously there are very different opinions on the Royals here but that’s fine, it’s all just opinion.
To change the subject, I’m disappointed the “collaborative” stage play Mike Bartlett was working on about Harry and Meghan didn’t come to anything. KC3 was so spookily prescient, what could he make from the current situation?

I understood Matt Hancock disappearing off to the jungle to a degree because he's a dad with three sets of school fees, a divorce and a mortgage to pay for, and he'd been dumped/rebuffed by 3 PMs in a row - so he decided to trouser £350k for eating testicles; as much as I loathe the individual and his life choices, it is still about family, so you make your own moral judgements and the world be damned.
The difference with Meg and H is they choose to hurt and harm others (in particular family) and undermine national institutions. They don't have to do that.

Until they sit down with a proper interviewer who asks them real questions on the lies/inconsistencies/hypocrisies of what they have said previously, I just can't take them seriously.
I switched off the documentary, its so laughably 'lifetime' movie esq. So many contrived shots and meaningful looks into the camera with a tear to the eye. Meghan proving why she never made it as an actress, and Harry just out of his depth. Nothing feels authentic, and with all the talking to camera on their phones its quite clear a documentary of some sort was planned years ago and they wanted to record everything.
It's a shame really when you think back to when they married and how excited and behind them we all were (well most of us).

It is such a shame it turned out like this. They could have been such a force for good in the UK and around the world whilst in the Royal Family. How Meghan can claim she never knew or had seen a walkabout is merely one claim that appears blatantly false. Why would she have seen a walkabout? Honestly, most of the world’s media does not cover the British Royal Family’s PR the way the British media do. It’s not a thing that would get major press coverage in the US, and any press coverage one on US soil would get would be very low on the news agenda and only be picked up by dedicated Royal-watchers. Most non-Brits would not know what a ‘walkabout’ is. What a weird thing to focus your ire on.

Either a mods thing option or very strong feelings on the subject Why the need to make this personal? Feels unnecessary to focus an attack on two members. I thought better of this place Because it is rather obvious who has very pre-existing strong negative opinions (and is very invested in the Royals), who has strong positive opinions, and who is just up for a lively discussion. I kind of wish there was a way to mute a thread - I know reading what some people post in this one will make me angry, because it *will* be nasty, mean-spirited, and unreasonable. Like most of the tabloid media is. It is unfathomable to me that people manage to be so angry at people who they do not know on behalf of others who they also do not know. Having watched the first 3 episodes I thought the focus was very clearly on the press, with very little about the actual Royal Family itself. No huge revelations for anyone who has been paying attention, though I appreciated the clear timeline - I’d forgotten they’d only been dating for a few months before being found out. I liked the glimpses of their family and the telling of their courtship story - I would note also that they shared no more than many couples would put on Instagram in this over-sharing social media age. It does strike me that even Charles’s generation grew up with far less intrusive media than William and Harry’s - Andrew, Anne, and Edward did not get that level of intrusion before their respective marriages, did they? Anyone else remember that Prince Edward was actually rumoured to be gay for years, because he managed to keep his girlfriends (including Ruthie Henshall!) out of the press for so long? I really do think it is in The Royals’ best interest to grasp the nettle of the way they work with the press, and work out how to provide better protection for the youngsters - otherwise we’ll be seeing a repeat of it in less than a decade with Prince George. By then the Harry and Meghan story will be old hat, one way or another, and the media will be after fresh meat.

Most non-Brits would not know what a ‘walkabout’ is. What a weird thing to focus your ire on. It was just one item that i saw on the news as I haven't sen the news. The fact that Harry would not have told her and she would have been briefed on what sort of thing Royals do. Royals have visited USA many times and it is all over their news and they have done many walkabouts. It just seems obvious that either she would have seen one or been told.

Well, while I do think that the Royal family are interesting from a historical point of view, and this latest "scandal" is just another chapter in its storied history, I can't say that I feel sorry for, or will be losing sleep over, the feelings of either side.
The Royal Family are born into palaces and privileges beyond anything we can ever imagine, and Harry and Meghan are living in an LA mansion making millions from Netflix. Who is there to cry over? I think everyone involved is going to be just fine!

I really wish there was a 'laughing' option as well as a liking one for this thread. The way some people put the bloody royal family on a pedestal is hilarious. It's a show family, pretty much like the Strallens, just with no talent and waaaaaaaay more money and privilege and a ridiculous amount of press coverage. And I am not even going into where all that money and privilege historically comes from, that is a whole other discussion.
Edited to add: And I get the being interested in them and entertainment values, like with any other celebrity out there, but it's not like they actually do anything special? And yes they do a lot of charitable work, but so do hundreds of thousands of others that have a day job to hold down on top of that. So considering that they are being subsidised by the tax payer, doing charitable work is the least they should be doing?

The hero worship of the royal family is utterly baffling to me. I know there are lots on here who really, heartfeltedly (definitely not a word, that) adore them so I don't want to hurt feelings there. But I do find it very uncomfortable. For Harry & Meghan, I just don't care either way. I think they get a very hard time by the media and the vitriol some people have for them is beyond me. Does that mean I think they're behaving well? I don't actually know, or have a clue why in the world it matters. Honestly, save your loathing for someone who really deserves it.

I'm a monarchist (in that I'd rather that than a president) but I certainly don't hero worship the RF. There are definitely issues that need addressing with the RF in order for it to survive.
However there is just so many blatant inconsistencies and things that are easy to fact check (and have been) I don't get why people are so invested and believe everything H and M say. We have lived through Boris and Trump, I thought by now people would have critical thinking and know not to take everything at face value. The racism is the big story, they could have left it at that and people would likely have believed them and been on their side. But by including so many narratives (many of which don't stand up to scrutiny or have been proven false), playing games by saying everything but also nothing they discredit themselves in many peoples eyes.
Plus they are now just bloody annoying and you cant escape them, bit like the Kardashians

I cannot remember a time when I could escape the Royal family, I only wish I was as fortunate as you and to have only come across the Royal Family since Harry got married to the woman he loves.
The Royal Family is the original Kardashians and would place Andrew as being more annoying.

The “inconsistencies” that people bang on about endlessly are stuff like Harry and Meghan referring to their non-legal private vow exchange as “getting married” (lots of people do the legal bit separate) - who cares what they emotionally consider their wedding when it doesn’t affect anyone else? Or Meghan being accused of lying that she didn’t know much about Harry just because she took a photo outside Buckingham Palace as a teenager.
The don’t live here and our taxes don’t pay for them so I just don’t understand why anyone other than fans would pay them the slightest bit of attention, when the actual royals take so much money, have so much political and media influence, and are a thousand times bigger liars and engage in such shocking degrees of corruption.
I care about Andrew raping trafficked teenagers.
I care about William threatening a journalist with false arrest to cover up his secret political meetings.
I care about William and Kate creating a PR charity to fund parties and jollies for themselves and hosting award ceremonies where the winners aren’t allowed to attend, but celebs get flown in from all over the world just to give Will and Kate a very expensive, charity-funded PR op.
I care about Charles accepting briefcases and Tesco carrier bags full of cash from despots and arms dealers linked to human rights abuse.
I care about William and Kate giving their CEO position to the best friend of a tabloid journalist who no only has zero qualifications or experience but has a long history of underhand behaviour, leaking to the press, and all manner or corruption and gross misconduct.
I care about blood royals illegally exploiting the Royal name for commercial endeavours without anyone blinking.
I care about the blatant lies, hypocrisy and corruption. The astounding level of racism. The extreme control of the press. The complete lack of accountability.
I don’t care that some random American celebrity considers a vow exchange to be her wedding when it wasn’t the legally binding ceremony.
