Surprised ATG didn't take it for the Phoenix, there doesn't seem much else happening there from mid March.

The mix of ratings at the top of this thread is very rare. It's unusual for a show to be so highly rated. There's something seriously amiss and worrying if there isn't room for shows of this calibre in the West End. As a Sondheim fan and fan of this production, I do wonder whether the response seen here in the ratings is a result of what some might see as Sondheim fans caught in the excitement, and to some extent were voting with attachment to the source material. With time since seeing it my impression and opinion of this production has faltered slightly. It wasn’t flawless and some of its warts were rather exposed. There were moments the atmosphere wasn’t right, even towards the end of the run lines were lost. From that awkward silence setting the scene to the clumsily staged First/Second Midnight. The cheap disco lighting (“special effects”) toward the end of Act One to the malfunctioning set. I still loved it but feel more willing now to admit it lacked the attention to detail and finesse of something you might expect to see in London. The cast were, mostly, brilliant but let down by other elements. It wasn’t a cheap production to mount by all accounts and maybe there isn’t enough confidence in the West End theatre going market right now. Sunday with the Broadway headliners didn’t initially sell as well as intended so shifting a regional production into town could be seen as a very risky financial move. It’s unfortunate as Sondheim deserves some glorious productions mounting now in his memory.

May I ask what “Sunday with the Broadway headliners” is? The Jake G/AA production that was cancelled?
Personally, I agree that there were some occasional rough moments in this ITW but nothing that couldn’t have been fixed. I think it was probably a financial decision - the show in Bath did not seem to move tickets as quickly that screams smash hit, there are no real names and the reviews were tepid, which may not have been able to be turned around in my opinion because Terry has been pseudo ‘cancelled’.
In any case, I feel grateful to have seen this production. I love the children’s show concept and thought the giant staging was jaw dropping. I will try and forget the cringe “Are YOU READY” moments even if it remains unintentionally memorable. Between Anyone Can Whistle and Into the Woods I hope to see Alex Young tackle more Sondheim one day. She is so funny! Maybe she can be ‘promoted’ to try Dot in Sunday should they mount it with Jake again and AA is busy doing Sweeney hehe.

Alex Young undoubtedly has both Desiree and Sally in her future, and my lord she is going to be sensational at both.

That's a shame, I've been waiting years to see a proper full production (not a concert or scaled back one). Should have gone to Bath

They did sort of shoot themselves in the foot box office-wise by signalling the London transfer was pretty much locked in place... if they'd kept schtum on that more London folk would probably have made the trip !

I'm glad that I made the trip from Edinburgh. Wasn't sure how I was going to feel after disliking the movie.
What made me go? That wonderful cast. Made a trip of it, visiting Bat out of Hell in Bristol on the way! Then a short stay in London the day after.
Ended up becoming one of my favourite shows of last year! Just such a smooth 1st preview with a great atmosphere.

Yep, I'm one of them Londoners who couldn't be bothered to go to Bath because I thought it would be coming to the West End! Not a huge fan of ITW but would have been interested to see this production. Ah well, that's the way it goes...

Strangely enough I also heard today that they're having one last go at getting this into town...

I feel like this has already been said upthread but I heard from somebody who works at the Lyric that this was all pencilled in for a January-May (ish) run and then either staff spoke up about being uncomfortable working with Gillian or they were worried about public reaction from certain people so they pulled it and 2:22 with Cheryl was their back-up. I really hope SOMEONE will take it anyway

Every London theatre owner went to see the show in Bath- and none liked it enough to offer it a west end theatre. It ain’t coming in. Everyone needs to get over it now.

I remember a similar thing with Amadeus with Matthew Kelly at Wiltons music hall: loads of producers went, it was talked up as a transfer, but when they saw it, it never happened. I like the show, but i can see why it wouldn't sell for the west end

This isn't at The Phoenix. But an Announcement is Very Imminent. Glad to see this happening again, greatly enjoyed the Production in Bath despite some minor issues that should be fixed. Right, is this an April Fool or not, please?

Right, is this an April Fool or not, please? Very much not an April Fools joke Thankfully. Well I was very much having a little April jape. Wonderful if I’ve created a little self fulfilling prophecy, though not holding my breath. No doubt Mr B will be round soon to confirm/deny.
