Taken from the Union Theatre thread and Whistle Down the Wind is playing there this Christmas, but not the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman’s version. So nearly 10 years now since the Andrew Lloyd Webber version toured, so it is about time to have another tour me think?
I like to see this show again.

I'd love to see this but very put off by actor musician Fair enough as its not to everyones taste - I enjoy it as it breaks away from naturalism that a lot of musical productions have in spades. After this production I wonder when the next one will come along? No day like today and all that!

Of course, the 2008 London revival of Sunset Boulevard originated at The Watermill too (and was a actor/musician production).

It’s a beautiful theatre but Whistle is essentially a rock score. Are said musicians going to be plugged in or radio miked up? Hardly seems worth it to fill such a small space. Whistle acoustic remix? No thanks.

Why? Is it getting a major revision? By far the Worst musical I've ever seen and there have been some stinkers. I disliked it but it wasn't the car crash that was Stephen Ward. Was it ? Never saw Stephen Ward but it did have Joanna Riding with the only decent song. Which is more than Whistle had to offer.

I've really hoped that a true major revival of WDTW would emerge - I love the score and think the story has some interesting possibilities. Have only seen bootlegs online and thought the Washington DC version (with Hal Prince as director) had more potential and it seemed to get weakened with each subsequent production.
All that being said, the actors/musician thing has never worked for me

Saw the original London production many times. Loved it. One of my favourite ALW musicals. Also , a few years ago , aquired a dvd of Washington production.

A show very special to me. I was one of the principals in an amateur production in 2013, so I really got the chance to live and breathe the piece. There was a lot of interesting tropes going on behind the main plot.

I think this is a score and book that has never had the production it deserves, so I'm very excited about this, although it feels like a slightly odd space for it (despite it probably being my favourite UK theatre).
I hope they treat it as an adult show that happens to involve children, rather than a kids show, which is what Kenwright tried to do with it. It's a show about racism and sexual desire and mortality, and learning that life can be brutal but we can face it together with those we love. The climactic moment between Swallow and The Man is one of the most powerfully charged in musical theatre - essentially for what doesn't happen, rather than what does.
I think it has some great songs - e.g. Unsettled Scores - and that awful Boyzone single is actually revealed to be a beautiful and touching song when placed in context. I also love the Act One climax - probably ALW's best lead into an interval after Phantom.

I agree with you that the Boyzone version is awful. Sorry, yes, I know. I just expressed myself badly. What I mean is that most people only know that song from the hit single (and most probably have no idea it comes from a musical), so it can come as a surprise when heard in context - especially as the tone, arrangement, lyrics and focus of the song are so different. I know people who hate the single who have expressed surprise at what a beautiful song it is when heard as originally conceived.

I love, love the score for this. And it has so much potential. I wish they'd commit to a slightly darker version. If there's an interesting cast I'll still go but I don't get/enjoy the actor musician thing so that's working against it for me. Hasn't that been done to death now.

Isn’t it just a wage bill & musicians union dodge? Put most of the music on click then get the performers to do 3 bars of ‘Frere Jacques’ on a recorder over the top of it? Certainly with the last Saturday Night Fever & Sister Act tours it felt like that.
The Watermill ‘Sunset’ was beautifully orchestrated but still felt underpowered at times. If it was as tight as that and well cast it could be great. I could certainly see ‘the man’ as a mysterious guitar hero, maybe even a steel six string to ‘country twang’ it up a bit.

Has anyone here sat front row at this theatre? What's the view like? From the limited images I can find it seems the stage is not raised, is that right?
