For anyone London based and interested, the British Film Institute (BFI) are screening Ingar Bergmans's Black & White classic Swedish Smiles of a Summers Night- the film that inspired Sondheim's A Little Night Music throughout January 2020.
Bergman's first major hit found him in a light-hearted mood, crating a scintillating comedy of mortal manners as several couples, ex-lovers and would-be-lovers gather at a country house in the summer of 1900. Dissecting the characters varies deceits and delusions with mischievous glee, he revels in the theatricality of their intrigue ; the pleasing ironic performances are pitched with seemingly effortless precision.
-WARNING- There will be subtitles.
