December is upon us, meaning it’s socially acceptable to put the tree up, warm the mulled wine and listen to Christian music.
So what are our favourite go-to Christmas records and guilty pleasures?

I've had my Christmas playlist since the middle of November! My favourite Christmas song varies depending on my mood but at the moment it's between Feliz Navidad and Fairytale of New York.

My guilty pleasure is Christmas puddings, although they are more of a November to March thing than strictly Christmas.
As for music, spare a thought for all the unfortunate staff of shops and restaurants who are going to hear the same seasonal playlist fifteen times a day for the next five weeks.

I always enjoy my Christmas in New York CD. Used to love those concerts, which ran for a few years.

Harry Connick Jr Christmas album is my absolute favourite. His Parade of the Wooden Soldiers is my first go-to Christmas song and I'll be playing that today.

I like exploring some European Christmas music
Riu riu chiu is a favourite. Gaudete is a great sing. The St Basil Carol from Greece is lovely.
There are some great French carols too particularly Il est ne.
The Wexford carol is really haunting. A friend of mine is singing it next week in a concert we are giving. I get to do the less haunting Winter Wonderland

We're big fans of all of Sufjan Stevens' output in this household (no mean feat when the ages range from 18-57, but especially of his Christmas box sets (there have been two). Also love a bit of Tracey Thorn's Tinsel and Lights and Carla Bley's Christmas CD which has lots of brass - important in a house where two members are serious brass players. For the first year this year our teenage daughter is a chorister at her Cambridge University college and so I expect we'll listen to a bit more traditional Christmas choral music than we would normally. Like many people our tradition is that today is the first day we will listen to any Christmas music. Sufjan is already playing out loudly!

With streaming now dominating the music industry, there seems to be a sort of resurgence in new Christmas songs over the last few years. A few modern classics in the making, like ‘One More Sleep’ by Leona, ‘Underneath The Tree’ by Kelly or ‘At Christmas’ by Kylie.
For the last few years Idina Menzel’s first Christmas album has become a traditional play, as has Kylie’s. It’s the only time of year I like to listen to Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey, both having great Christmas albums too.
I have a huge soft spot for Girls Aloud’s Christmas album (which was criminally tagged into one of their studio albums) - any song with lyrics like ‘bish bash bong whoo’ deserves a listen. Steps also delivered a great little Christmas song two years ago called ‘Dear Santa’ that absolutely love, and Claire Richards releases a much underrated original Christmas song called ‘My Heart is Heading Home (This Christmas)’.
There’s a whole load of new albums for 2019. I’m looking forward to listening to Lea Michele’s new Christmas album and I can now finally listen to Idina’s new one too. But the one that interests me most this year is Robbie Williams’ - a mammoth 28 songs (with 19 original Christmas songs).

In terms of Christmas Music, my two go-to cds are Annie Lennox's Christmas Cornucopia and Enya's Winter Came. My single most favourite Christmas song though is Erasure's "She won't be home" Was also pleased to rediscover last year (after my ex kept his copy when we split) the CD made back in the 80s of all the West End casts singing the old favourites. I love that.

The gold standard from the Great American Songbook era has a tie for first place with
Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Hugh Martin
and
Christmas Song - Mel Torme
both superb songs.
Amongst Christmas carols three favourites are
Coventry Carol The Angel Gabriel O come, O come Emmanuel
There's a bit of a trend to my carol likes - they're all in a minor key/mode.
Just to lower the tone - I remember teaching the latter carol to a class of 14 year olds on teaching practice in the 70s and being baffled by all the sniggering going on, until I realised they were all associating it with a series of soft core porn films that (unbelievable to think of it now) were doing the rounds simultaneously in mainstream cinemas.
