I ❤️ Helen Sjöholm
The late, incredibly great, Josefin Nilsson was also sublime as Svetlana in that production.
Not from the production itself but a live performance from Swedish show 'Allsång på Skansen' just shows how glorious they were.

Stunningly beautiful, Ryan and sadly another voice of an angel taken far too young x

I am also one of these people that like's aisle seats. Frustratingly though although most nights it looks half empty, all the stalls aisle seats seem to have gone. Makes you wonder if ENO holding them back No, all seats were on sale. Aisles there are just popular. ENO dynamic price on their own site, and put discounts out via agents too. They are not in control of this one as producers, though, of course. The producers have over the past few years only gone as far as "no booking fee" on many dates, if that is a track record to look at. Thanks!

Best script Best cast Loved it! Hmmm. Impressed with Ramin there, but not so much the other three. Mmm I'm not impressed with Ramin at all. All his notes are off key except (sometimes) the long straight "Moo's" at the end of a line. As for all of them, they are overdoing it. They need to understand that this music and material is already very intense, so treating each word, note and syllable with such exaggeration and also separating many sung words from spoken words, sometimes multiple times in 1 line, and then when the next syllable is sung they make it extremely exaggerated, makes it feel very tiresome, overly dramatic, posturing and unfortunately feel more fake and less real and intense. People need to learn that this material should be approached in a more natural way. More respect for the sung lines and the audience will engage much more. There is a reason why they are singing, because this art form is about sung thoughts. More than 75% of the lyrics and music should not be sung in a soap opera way (speaking/bleating) in someone else's face in a way too literal and exaggerated way and pretend that that gives the essence or intention more power. It does not. The essence should not be that literal. There is a higher power in this art form. Less literal soap opera, more natural opera feeling. Here is a clip with some good examples of that. The naturally sung scenes are much better acted too. Because acting through song is an interaction of both, not a separation. The naturally sung notes work as emotion evoking factors. Not the forced/separated/fake ones.

Graham Norton just playing 'I know him so well' on his radio show...for a second I thought I'd lost a day and it was EP time already.
ETA it's not actual Graham who is apparently stranded by weather.

I agree with Dave25...these Chess concerts are so oversung. In this clip I feel that the ladies do a good job sticking to the score. Ramin and Raul are a bit out of control. Going off the rail with riffing is kind of tacky, TBH. Just stick to the score. If you have to - modulate here and there but please don't deviate to a point when the song becomes unrecognizable.
I like the new orchestral arrangements in the DC version, and US vs USSR/Diplomats at the top of the show works much better.

Obviously similar though they are

Interesting that the tendency to oversing and riff on material that needs no decoration should be raised. That's my main worry about the cast for ENO. Can any of them be trusted to sing it properly?

They're all capable. We need a strict MD in there to keep them under control and make them cut the nonsense. *still trying to be optimistic*

Ball is not going to riff. I'm not a fan - but he tends to be a classicist and he is well secure to need to riff. I'm not sure about the girls. I feel that there will be some parts where we should expect a modulation or two or seven, mainly in Nobody's Side, and Alexandra might try something in her solo number. I also wouldn't be surprised if I Know Him So Well might have a key change. Tom Howar might I suppose. His character is a show off and narcissistic ass, so it could work as part of the character

Ball's vibrato and vocal tics are far more disturbing than any riffing that might occur.

The MD should also explain to them that every gently written verse in Chess should not be sung like the last verse of "And I am teling you" from the final performance of Jennifer Holliday in Dreamgirls on Broadway.
If that Kennedy Center cast does half of what they are doing now (in terms of intention and exaggerating every syllable and constantly switch between speaking and singing) and actually sing on key, and stay away from the riffing posturing, they are heading a little step in the right direction.
I hope that is the approach for the ENO version.

Not from the production itself but a live performance from Swedish show 'Allsång på Skansen' just shows how glorious they were. Wonderful version, sung properly without all the histrionics. And a beautifully restrained reception from the crowds too- clearly appreciative but without the Obligatory Standing Ovation we’ve now all grown used to... I love Helen Sjöholm too but am having difficulty finding any of her recordings in English (I have the BA Band Story of a Heart CD). From her website and from searches on Discogs etc it’s unclear whether the Songs are sung in English or Swedish. Any help appreciated...

Ball's vibrato and vocal tics are far more disturbing than any riffing that might occur. To be fair, he is capable - sometimes - of keeping his annoying mannerisms under control. He managed it in That Day We Sang - but Victoria Wood was known for being quite strict in terms of wanting actors to perform her stuff exactly as written. If the music director (and Benny Andersson) put their foot down in rehearsals, he could be quite good. If they don't, all bets are off.

True that he's worse when making decisions for himself in concert settings, but it's always a risk in a live performance. Wood was a perfectionist, and of course wanted it played in a certain style, but she always had the option of a second take.

She mostly sings in Swedish really. She does a lot with the Benny Andersson Orkester with Tommy Korberg but again, most of that is in Swedish too.

I have been listening to the recording made at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008 and hope the orchestra at the ENO will be up to same standard. Groban and Menzel's voices complemented each other. I hope that will happen with our singers here too. Wish we had Bedella as Molokov.
