Cassidy Janson always sounds a bit amateurish to me, lacking technique, flat at times and not nuanced. But with that said, I still think she will be better than Idina Menzel.
Alexandra Burke is so misplaced vocally and type wise, I really can't think of any reason why they cast her. It just feels very weird and forced.
If this casing is true of course, it might all be a bad rumor.

I’m not the biggest Ball fan but I suspect he will be rather good in this.
Older than the usual? But is age written into the the book ?

I think the age difference between Alexandra and Michael is just too much,29 and 55 singing Mountain duet does not seem to ring true. In the original production Tommy and Elaine were the same age.
Just will be glad when it is confirmed or denied!

If Alexandra Burke is playing anyone in this production it’s Svetlana, not Florence so she won’t be duetting on any mountains! She’ll be standing there (in rubber-soled shoes) doing her one and a half songs, putting all her recent dance training to no use whatsoever. I just hope she doesn’t start shimmying. Or wear that Mary Poppins outfit.
Time will tell.

That What's onstage article is giving Tim Rice a co-directing credit. Has he ever directed anything before? That spells almost as much trouble as the casting which is hopefully fiction.

Apart from Burke I'm happy with that.

I've just trolled ENO and told them this is madness and they should take control.
But really...I can take Burke but Michael Ball is just going to ham it up.

In my opinion, the annual ENO musical should be a high profile show with a high profile, a-list star, for a limited engagement only. We started off so well with Emma Thompson and then Glenn Close, but are we honestly at the stage where the ENO has to cast whoever they can get?
I appreciate the whole idea is to make money, but a few years later and we’re supposedly swapping Glenn Close for Alexandra Burke? Next year I’ll wait until casting has been confirmed.
But I am looking forward to seeing it as I’ve never seen a production of Chess. It just feels... slightly cheaper now.

It was exciting years 1 and 2 as they had A list stars for a limited engagement. Alfie Boe and Katherine Jenkins we’re down to b-list and despite being ok singers couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag. I agree though, going from La Close to La Burke is quite a drop (and the ticket prices haven’t changed!) I had hoped for someone like Nicole Scherzinger as Svetlana. Might be an unpopular opinion but I think she’d carry Someone Else’s Story very well.

Don't underestimate the pull of Mr Ball especially with ladies in their 40s. He will fill the place easily.

Well, someone said upthread that they had started out with high fallutin’ intentions about big star names and had been forced to stand down, hence now being left with Mickey and Alex.
It’s either that, or they have played an absolute blinder by successfully selling most of those expensive stalls tickets on the back (in part) of previous star casting which they didn’t even try to repeat.
I’ll be very wary next year too.

Is this finally official now or are people still getting all excited about the unsubstantiated Facebook rumour from a few days ago?

I don't think WhatsOnStage would have run an article on it (albeit saying a rumour) if there wasn't some truth here somewhere...

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think she’d carry Someone Else’s Story very well. Can't see much advantage in swapping one pop singer for another. if Equity is doing its job there's already a glut of spare American stars being dumped onto Westend stages by US producers - more would be ridiculous - when so much of the domestic top talent isn't working. The casting problem for chess may well be worse at the moment because some of the very best UK females for these particular roles went to the US to do a musical , and are either doing other things there, and in just one case, is about to open on Broadway. Not sure it matters performancewise where the singers are on the celeb monitor. The last Time I saw Chess in London, Aoide Mullholland in the ensemble, was comprehensively outclassing the two female big name leads vocally. The issue is who could act the roles. And there they seem to have got stuck wanting someone people will know - to fill the seats . They get the nod - rather than someone discerning theatre goers will recognise can act it - but who don't qualify as well known enough. There's still some obviously great choices available - who have just having spent years acting major musical leads well, and some who have even been on TV too - in Game of Thrones, or Over The Rainbow.

Sniggers softly at the idea of a Ball fanbase being in their 40's ... having been to a couple of his (& Mr Boe) shows in recent months you'd need to be shoving a decade or two on there. I have never seen Chess. Quite fancy it. Also quite fancy having some pennies in my purse at the end of the month, so I'll wait this one out a bit, I think.

The prestige of these ENO musical productions has certainly been devalued.

Well, 2018 is fast becoming My Year of Seeing Stuff I Don't Want to See Through no Fault of my Own. I expect to be uninundated with messages of sympathy.
I mean, each to their own and all that. But for me the worst thing about having to spend 2 hours In The Room Where It Happens (see what I did there?) with the veteran performer, Mr Ball, will be suffering those around me who will be hyperventilating with pleasure and jumping up to applaud every breath.

I was so hoping this was just a rumour with no validity to it. I actually don’t have a problem with any of them individually. But the combination of them all feels a bit plonked together.
I think that’s the problem. Ball could be interesting because he is older than normally played and probably will sing it well, Janson I think will be a great Florence, Burke I don’t think will butcher the role at all and will probably do a decent job of acting it, and it’s nice to have Head on board as a throw back to the original cast. But put them all together in one production and it all feels a bit square pegs for circular holes.

I know it’s ridiculous but I can’t help obsessing over what costume they’ll put MB in. I can’t picture him in anything but a a tux with braces and a dickie bow or a grey shiny suit.
I DO like Michael though. I think he’s adorable and seems like a genuinely fun and funny chap. I’ve only seen him once live in Hairspray where he camped it up hugely and owned the entire evening.
But for this part...?
I’m adjusting and kind of looking forward to it but in a different sort of way now. AND that orchestra is going to be AMAZING with that score. You can’t take that away.
