Sarcasm does not translate well does it! LOL I think we need to add "Assume post is sarcastic until told otherwise" to the FAQs around here.... (See also, 'Assume post is slightly lecherous until told otherwise particularly if it involves Studley Fraser' I think we do, I didn't read it there, and I'm usually good with noticing it, even online, where it can be difficult at times. I'm also quite sarcastic in real life. But I didn't read it that way and started to worry last night, because I really want to go to this, but haven't got around to booking yet. I'm not waiting for cast announcement, i just haven't sorted when I want to go yet. I was out from early this morning, but planned to book as soon as I got home if demand was that high.

Don’t worry, it isn’t. Two or three dates are heavily booked otherwise there seems to be lots of choice.

Really surprised that so many on here are waiting for ‘names’ before they book, as if the piece itself will sound sh*te without any. Whatever you think of the (ever-changing) book, the score is one of the best, surely... Well I think so, anyway. I'm only waiting for "names" so I can decide on how much I'm willing to pay. I will be going whatever but the cast will dictate if I am prepared to pay £105 or £50.

There’s a huge difference between hearing it in a top venue with a huge orchestra (something many commented on for Sunset) as opposed to the local amdram’s venue and a reduced band, I think.

Not if the singing and acting are crap! A wonderfully played score can be ruined by the singing on top of it. Either way, it's not my favourite musical in the world, and it's far too long, so if they don't cast someone who can do Anthem justice, I won't be going.

True that! Whilst better than most tours, I found the keyboard intrusions on the Sunset tour quite jarring and especially compared to that gorgeous noise from the orchestra at the Coliseum. The last Chess I saw was Revel Horwoods actor/muso version which was terribly underpowered so to see a properly orchestrated version will be enough, but tip top leads is what will make me book in advance rather than getting something last minute.

It's also nothing to do with "names" - it's about whether whoever they cast can do the score justice. There are just as many "names" who would put me off as would excite me! Yes, that's why I'm waiting for a cast announcement before deciding whether to go. I love the piece but there are so many celebrities that could be stunt cast who I would not want to see in it.

For me best ever version of Anthem was sung by Maurice Clarke. That version will take a hell of a lot of beating.

That was the tour that started at the Theatre Royal Plymouth also with Rebecca Storm. I agree with you about Maurice!

That was the tour that started at the Theatre Royal Plymouth also with Rebecca Storm. I agree with you about Maurice! Rebecca Storm was wonderful as Florence. I often wish she’d sing ‘Someone Else’s Story’ as part of her concert repertoire. In the tour back then, it was still Florence’s song and Storm sang it so well.

Was that first tour a wholesale recreation of the West End version?

Was that first tour a wholesale recreation of the West End version? No. From memory they replicated much of the original production but it certainly lacked the moving floor, the large TV screens and all the big production values. I agree that Rebecca Storm is a huge talent. I’m listening to all sorts of stuff by her on Youtube now, and her voice has the most incredible purity about it.

The Chess board definitely moved and was on hydraulics; that and Storm are my only real memories of it.

But there again I can’t even remember where I saw it. But I did get Rebecca Storm’s autograph! Edit- Just checked (pardon the pun!) on RJS Chess website (fantastic btw) and they note that this production had only a small lifting chessboard on a revolve, not the one from the Prince Edward. This site is a great source of information with lots of photographs.

I saw the Maurice Clarke/ Rebecca Storm tour. The chessboard definitely didn't do the turns and tilting of the London production. It lit up correctly in a good night, but nothing spectacular. A later tour didn't even do that.

I believe the 2 remaining Beverley Sisters Teddie and Babs have cleared their diaries. I think they are going to alternate the roles every other night.
