I am still hoping for Ramin Karimloo. I am not sure that Tim Minchin is a good enough actor or singer and Groban is just a bit vanilla vocally. At his concert there was an ENO Chess sized gap in his future plans (Chess concert in the US early in the year and Che in Japan in the Summer) and he seems to be planning to stay in the UK..... His 'Anthem' is so good, even with a banjo. Ooo Ramin! Good shout!

Not an endorsement of Michael Ball at all to have anything with this, but he DID sing a great You and I with Elaine Paige back in the day on The Michael Ball Show (it's on YouTube). I saw it on TV and was like whoa what is that, and found someone who was flying overseas and got me the double album (that I still own!).

Ben Forster seen hobbling down The Strand yesterday looking nervous... He wasn’t at Buckingham Palace then, standing next to the Queen 👑.

Last weekend I have visited the new Danish production of Chess. I had planned to see it on friday and saturday evening, but after the first night on friday I rushed yo the box office to get me one of the last seats for the saturday mat. The new Danish chess ( London script) is a total winner. I love chess and have seen many productions, but this verion is without any doubt the best I have seen. It has some stunning staging/choreography, the pace of the show is just perfect and the woman who plays Florence is the star of the show. I have a lot of chess trips plannend but I am tempted to book another trip to Copenhagen to see it again. Seeing this production you really wonder why they are changing the book for the washington production. If chess is wel directed it is a gripping and intelligent story.

Aren't we just getting the same cast as the upcoming New York Concert?

I doubt it. I think there's a big chance Ramin will be London's Anatoly, but I doubt the rest will. BTW the upcoming concert is in DC.

At this stage the more pertinent question would be are we getting any cast at all?

Well there are just a few tickets left for this if you are quick! Stalls and Dress Circle at only £125 and £75 and Upper Circle at £65 and £50.
Unbelievable there is no cast announcements yet. There has to be a HUGE name attached to this to sell the few remaining tickets.....

There are 92 days until it opens.
Surely they must have an announcement soon.
It better be a good one as well.

If they have such a good advance they do not need a name.

Not sure if you were looking at a paticuliar date but I've just checked a couple of random dates at the beginning of the run and there was loads of availability. So I'm still going to hold out until casting announced.

If it's selling that well on just the reputation of the score, why bother with a big name star? In which case, why the big delay....?

Should they announce a really interesting big star name, I'd probably have to pounce on a ticket quickly, but I'm not buying until the cast has been announced. Somehow it's beginning to feel rude to leave the audience in the dark for so long.

Ditto on the waiting game. They won't sell out the entire run without a 'name' or two, it's not THAT well known a musical (and many people, also think it's a load of sh*te don't forget).
I also doubt the US cast could be considered 'name' enough- Esparza has his following both in MT and from Hannibal/Law and Order, but I doubt he's known enough over here. Ramin in fact has a bigger following over here...but again probably not quite enough to fill out the Coliseum night on night.
Anyway I'm basically resigned to 'If it ain't Groban again I ain't there' but you know the casting Gods may yet surprise me...

I'd be so there for Groban, since I hate myself for missing him at the RAH.
While I like Karimloo, he couldn't even sell out the small Arts Theatre, so I doubt he's that much of a draw to fill the Coliseum.
I also think that Chess IS one of those musicals, especially in concert form, where they can draw in pop singers that don't need to have musical theatre voices or great acting skills. Unlike Carousel or Sunset Blvd for example.
Weirdly I can't think of anyone (except Groban perhaps) that makes me think "OMG, YES!" but then I'm absolutely not up to date on pop music stuff. I do feel that the interest in this kind of classic-pop-crossover that made people like Josh Groban and Katherine Jenkins big has waned somewhat in recent years and most pop music makes my ears bleed.

Ive heard they are just waiting for Claire Sweeney and Biggins to confirm their availability. Biggins has fetes and Mr Gay UK judging slots heavy pencilled for most of the Spring which rules him out I’m afraid. Sweeney however is dangerously free throughout.

Really surprised that so many on here are waiting for ‘names’ before they book, as if the piece itself will sound sh*te without any. Whatever you think of the (ever-changing) book, the score is one of the best, surely...
Well I think so, anyway.

Whatever you think of the (ever-changing) book, the score is one of the best, surely... Well I think so, anyway. It's a great score, but I've seen good amdram productions for a fifth of the price or less, so I'm certainly waiting to see if the casting justifies spending money on this! It's also nothing to do with "names" - it's about whether whoever they cast can do the score justice. There are just as many "names" who would put me off as would excite me!
