A musical for me needs to have great songs and I love shows that puts such a serious subject in a lighthearted and fun way and that is Hairspray to a T. I so love this musical it is number 3 in my top musicals of all time ( seeing this in the Neil Simon and Shaftsbury was one of the best time I ever had). I am watching some remarkable performances tonight, however this still leaves me cold as did the movie. This though does serve a good purpose and re-inforces why I love theatre and how it always works it magic.
Unfortunately I didn't here the bells tonight.

My Tivo box is getting very confused as I want it to record Hairspray, Boe and Ball and Sheridan Smith all at the same time, and it's not having any of it. Bit like buses coming along at the same time. Sheridan is on again Monday after 10pm news.

Jennifer Hudson was definitely the highlight of this.
Ariana Grande was awful, both dramatically and vocally. There was a lot of technical issues and also some flubbed lines. Didn't Tracy forget lyrics during Good Morning Baltimore?
Hoping they will edit it with some of the pre-filmed footage before it is released on DVD.

What a hot mess! Terrible sound Awful camera work Dreadful lighting. The only redeeming feature was JHud. Ariana Grande was just so hopeless. Is that you, Parsley? Are you and mrb one and the same?!

And whilst I know what a mammoth undertaking this was, I'm afraid this seemed rather shoddy, with too many clumsy mistakes to be acceptable. It just felt rather underpowered and ugly, with under-rehearsed production values.

I thought Grease was much slicker than this.
There were so many mistakes in this that it felt like they'd never done a camera rehearsal before. But they've been rehearsing for THREE MONTHS!!!!!!
One of my all time favourite shows massively tainted for me.

It was OK but an awful lot of mistakes and I wasnt even looking out for them especially. Ad breaks pratically every 5 minutes which was annoying. Thank god for fast forward. Must say ice nit been much of a fan of the live broadcasts so far apart from the UK version of Sound of Music which I really enjoyed.

Really enjoyed it. Loved the way they used the set, it was really good. Jennifer Hudson and Kristin Chenoweth stand outs for me - loved them both and both amazing in their roles! Also really surprised by Ariana Grande, I really enjoyed her in it!! Also thought Dove Cameron was great as Amber!!
Really upset they cut 'Big doll house'
Quite like the song at the end between Ariana and Jennifer.

Have to say I've never heard of Arianna but I thought she mumbled her words and couldn't hear what she was singing. Or was it just bad sound?

Do people think that the song at the end "come so far" would work well in the stage show like at the end during the bows??

the staging and design of the Link/Tracey prison seen was one of the most clumsy pieces of television I've ever seen. So brightly lit, and they just could not get a decent shot of the faces, and what a flimsy excuse for the escape. What was their thinking for not having the other protesters in prison? Tawdry and amateur.

Downloaded it straight away. I didn't like many of the songs in Hairspray so adding this somewhere would be a bonus.

Have to agree with MrB actually, it was all a bit of an ugly mess. Such a shame they messed up Kristin's bow at the end as well, they cut to Ariana Grande struggling with yet another note instead.

Cutting Kristin's bow for Harvey and Martin annoyed me too, especially as she was the biggest highlight of the show with Jennifer. Also annoyed me that after Kristin's first solo, they didn't play any of the audio of the audienfe appluding so there was just awkward audio and then an ad, whilst most of the other songs got the audio and cheers. Tiny peeve but still.

It was quite disappointing. Truly poor camera work and sound issues. Grease was much better than this, and I think hairspray would have also benefitted from a live audience through out.
Lost count of how many jokes fell flat from all cast members.
Amber and seaweed were good. Martin short and Kristen were ok, Jennifer was good for a celebrity but id never say she was better than Sandra or others who have played motormouth on stage. She was also too slim really, it was hard to buy into her and Edna connecting. Link was the twinkiest link ever and penny was just out of her depth.
Apparently the viewing figures were quite poor too
Considering the budgets american tv have I think we pulled off a much better live show with the sound of music last year.

I loved this, despite the constant ad breaks.
Yes there was at least one technical fluff but come on, it was worth watching for Harvey Fierstein's Edna and Jennifer Hudson's stunning singing.
Hugely enjoyable. Yes the show is corny and cheesy but why knock the live broadcast for that?
Was Kristen 'Miss Baltimore Crabs'? Thought she was awful.

Viewing figures for this in America pretty much matched Peter Pan in terms of viewers on the night, lower than Sound of Music and The Wiz.

I heard about this, kinda wish she had stormed the stage in character whilst Tracy had taken her bow to take her own bow once her boob was popped back into the dress.
