First casting has been announced for the TV event that will be broadcast on NBC on the 7th December 2016: Harvey Fierstein will reprise the role of Edna Turnblad for which he won a Tony Award on Broadway, and Jennifer Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle. Further casting tba. from www.westendframe.com/2016/04/jennifer-hudson-harvey-fierstein-to.htmlI'm really looking forward to seeing this. I really like Hairspray and I do hope that it'll be as good as Grease was done on Fox.

I am also hugely looking forward to this, and Grease I thought was superbly done as a live event and it was also brilliant in itself. I do like Harvey Fierstein and I guess it will be fun to see the original take on the role, but I must admit I felt it was a slightly predictable move, considering he is also the script adaptor for the live version, and it would've been nice to see another big star take on the brilliant role.....and someone who also could maybe sing!!

I imagine NBC will copy some of the elements that made Grease Live work so well for Hairspray.

Jennifer will be great! She's gonna steal the show with 'I know where I've been'
I hope they broadcast it in the UK again like they did with Grease

Channel 5 aired the NBC Sound of Music and ITV2 aired Grease Live so I think it's likely one of those two will pick it up.

Film 4 show the film like it's going out of fashion so yes I'm also hopeful that the title has become a name that will be recognised and picked up for a UK broadcast. If not, I'm sure a link will be available after an online search....that's how I watched The Wiz Live!

The fact there is a new UK tour of the show plus the original London production ran successfully for just over two years and toured the UK, it's not iconic like Grease or The Sound of Music but it's more well known than Peter Pan (the musical not the character itself) and The Wiz

New songs are also going to be added.
I was slightly disappointed that the rumoured sequel "White Lipstick" didn't materialise.

This is one of my favourite musicals (saw the tour for the 3rd time in Llandudno and absolutely loved it) so I can't wait to see this. Sounds like NBC are doing a similar thing to Fox's Grease Live in terms of filming and audience, which can only be a good thing.

Looking forward to this, Jennifer Hudson will certainly be able to sing I Know Where I've Been extremely powerfully! Excellent casting so far.

Never going to get a better Corny than James Marsden for my money.

That's more acceptable than having never heard of Martin Short. Derek Hough's sister is Julianne Hough, who was Sandy in Fox's Grease Live!. Gotta keep it in the fam!

Why do they think that adding new songs will make things better for the TV?
People are tuning in because they love the show/want to see a favourite performer.
The new song in Grease was awful and clearly only there to pander to a name.
Just do the existing material well!!

I agree with you that Hairspray doesn't need any new songs, it's perfect as it is. However, if the new songs are written by Shaiman and Whitman, I'm quite confident that they'll be similar to the original songs and much better than the lame new song in Grease.

Could the new songs be so they can be eligible for awards where there's an award for Best Original Song?

I just hope they keep 'Mama I'm a big girl now' in this time and don't cut it like they did in the movie.

I just hope they keep 'Mama I'm a big girl now' in this time and don't cut it like they did in the movie. As long as they only add songs and don't cut any, I'm fine with it. I mean I certainly wouldn't cry if they cut The Big Dollhouse and Cooties, the rest of the score I'm a huge fan of. I wonder if they'll include Ladies Choice and The New Girl In Town, neither are in the 2002 stage show, but both were included for the 2007 film. As it happens, Ladies Choice was completely new for the 2007 film, New Girl In Town was originally written for the stage show then cut, but reinstated for the film. I also *really* like the song they wrote to go over the film credits; Come So Far (Got So Far To Go). The fact that Shaiman & Wittman had to alter the stage score largely in various different ways for the film, gives me confidence in any changes or additional songs that for some reason are needed for the live production!
