I had a sneak peak tour of the new building this evening, ahead of the public opening next week.
Started with talks from administrators of the company and then had a q&a with 4 of the dancers, I’m not good with names I’m afraid. Interestingly two started ballet at 10 (one a Billy Elliot who went to RBS to train for the role) one at 7 and the other at 6.
They are sad to leave the old space in west London because of its history and how many greats would have rehearsed there but they really, really love the new facilities.
The building will be open to the public, it will have a coffee bar on the ground floor and all the staircase area is public so people could get a coffee, go to the floor above the rehearsal studios and have a look at what’s going on. They can close the blinds for top secret stuff.
There is a green room which is half a self catering canteen area complete with ping pong table and half a matted area dancers can stretch on or work on their shoes etc.
There is a production studio with fly tower and bleacher seating so they can have invited audience for tech/dress rehearsals. They hope to have tech apprenticeships in the studio. Other companies will rent out this space, the Les Mis concert team used it recently.
Then further studios that are all 15m by 15m so that everything can be rehearsed in a stage sized room.
They have a gym which was mostly a few weights and kettle balls at the moment and a Pilates studio. And we didn’t see but saw the signs for the ice baths, hydrotherapy pool and dressing rooms.
We didn’t see the music space, they have an archive of music there but are not yet sure how to share that space with the public but do want to at some point.
The costume department was like sewing bee on steroids. In the old building yet could only dye one metre of fabric at a time, here they have a side room of vats for dying and a winch system that will allow for 25m to be done at a time.
The main room had boxes and boxes of threads and buttons and fabrics and files and files of costume bibles for each production. As well as sewing machines, ironing boards etc. They’ve several fitting rooms with decent mirrors and lighting.
They will have apprenticeships in the costume department as well and in music for rehearsal pianists and the like.
Couldn’t take pictures on the tour, just in the lobby, because it’s still not open. There are tours coming up as part of the Unity arts festival but they might be booked up already. But there will be other events in the future.
