Not sure about this. I don't have much patience any more for long-running series, so I got fed up with it long before it finished, and can't really remember the end.
The trailer just makes it look like another "servants clash with visitor's servants" episode that they did quite a few times already in the series. It's hard to see what this is doing that's new to justify being a film, rather than just a Christmas special.
Off the top of my head I can't think of any normal dramas being turned into films, it usually seems to be either sitcoms or sci-fi, so I'll be ineterested to see how well (or not) this film does.

I imagine it’s been done to milk the last few dollars out of the US market because the tv series was hugely popular there.

How could anyone resist this? It will be predictable and pointless and after you've seen it, you will forget it's existence before reaching the door of the cinema. Perfect mindless entertainment, I can't wait!
(However, I understand Asda are sponsoring it, ASDA!! The Dowager Countess would have kittens!)

I took my Nebraskan visitors to Highclere Castle in May (via Stonehenge, it's what they wanted to do). I'm so glad I went, it's the most beautiful building and the grounds. THE GROUNDS! I haven't seen an episode since my visit although they are running all the series on Sky early evenings. Can I say again, THE GROUNDS! (Gardens to the likes of you and me). Lady Carnarvon does a blog and it's v entertaining, she sound like a right sweetie (and enjoyed Hamilton earlier this year too). www.ladycarnarvon.com/blog/I may visit my local Vue for this as at least I'm guaranteed to be able to watch a film without youths on phones through it.

There is a significant market for the film - and I suspect it will be followed by at least one more if it does ok at the box office.
Nostalgia sells. Dame Maggie sells. Downton will sell.
It is comfort viewing - and we all need a bit of that right now.

The only thing I’m excited about is Maggie Smith’s return to the screen after too long a break (I don’t count Gnomeo and Juliet 2; I also don’t blame her for slowing down a bit).

After the trailer played last night, somebody in the audience very loudly said "God, that looks AWFUL!" to much laughter from the rest of us. Can't disagree.

Ha, I’m sure for some people it does look terrible - but for those of us who aren’t much interested in the latest Tarantino, or who don’t have kids, or who don’t want to see the next 2.5 hour disaster/action flick that was just like the last one, Downton should be great! A chance to revisit characters that feel like old friends, and watch a cast that’s gelled over several series on TV do what they do best. Aaaah.

Let’s be honest, the matinee audience is going to lap it up. A lot of the art house chains are doing afternoon tea events which are selling quite well.

I suppose it depends on the audience to whom the trailer is played. I can't imagine the audience of "The Lego Movie" or "Fast and Furious" queuing to see Downton, but there will be an audience and I'll be amongst it.

Been years since I watched the series though, might do a little refresher this week.

Just watched the trailer. Looks brilliant and David Haig, 👍💥 All the ingredients there in buckets full. I like that it starts with a telegram just as the series did with the news of the death of the heir. I bet they all loved being recalled for the movie, pension pot boosted.
I"ll wait though til Netflix or dvd release.

I already thought this was a bit of a money grab, now I see they've pimped Mrs Patmore out to Asda 💰

You're going to be mindblown when you find out that people can like multiple things that are all very different from each other. My family loved The Lego Movie, spent some time in the Fast And Furious movieverse this summer, and the only reason we won't be queuing for Downton is because we'll book our tickets online and sneak in supermarket snacks, which bypasses most of the need to stand in a line.

OK everybody, I was using those two film titles to make a point. I chose them because they were in the top 10 films of the week. I realise people have wide and varied interests.

Saw this today and basically it delivers exactly what you'd expect. It's fluff, but fluff of the highest order. Dame Maggie really is the reason to see it, the plot is the usual First World Problems, a lot of fun with the Battle of the Butlers. I can't say I was a devoted fan of the series so maybe I didn't get quite as much out of it as some but as a chance to see some thespians in their element it very much delivers.

Yes, I was one of the seven people in the cinema this evening who could be arsed. That's going to set the box office on fire. Yes, as talkinghead says it very much delivers.

The Odeon in Oxford was similarly empty. Probably under 40 people.
Yes it was predictable. Yes it is safe. But it was well made with solid performances.
Delighted for Barrow. Bit mawkish in places.
But engaging and I didn't look at my watch once.

I suspect it's not the sort of film that's going to be attracting the Friday night crowd. It'll probably be a strong weekday performer.

I've never seen the tv series but am going tonight as I assume I could see this as a standalone production and thought I would enjoy it. Plus it's "free" with my Curzon membership and a slightly less late night for once (early evening showing, post-theatre matinee) would be welcome.
Oddly I was the first to book for my chosen screening and had left it quite late but I think the cinema added screens for this after assessing its initial popularity. Suits me as I get an aisle seat in a small auditorium instead of being stuck in the middle of a long row in a larger one.

Saw this earlier and loved it. It is basically a Christmas special and there’s nothing to justify it being in the cinema, but it’s lovely to see the lives of these characters move forward just that little bit more. From the ending, I assume the next film (should it be a hit) or Christmas special (if ITV can afford it) will begin with Violet’s death and end with Tom’s wedding?
The whole assassination plot was a bit silly, as was locking the King’s servants in bedrooms, but at least Mr Mosley got to speak to the king and Queen! Old Mr Mosley would be so proud ha.
Happy for Thomas, but I still feel it was a disservice not including a similar plot in the main show. Edith was a bit of a spare part, but let’s be honest - what’s new? I quite liked the subtle hints that Edith’s life is simplifying (despite marrying a marquess) and that it’s very likely her estate will wind down in her lifetime... 3rd movie plot?
Anyway, nothing Oscar worthy, though I’d like Dame Maggie to be nominated. Maybe a few costume awards come awards season. I do wonder what the future of the show is. Would someone pick up the mantle once Julian Fellowes is no longer able? I’d quite like to see it again in 50 years and see Michelle playing ‘the old woman’.

Apparently it is scheduled to be shown on ITV this Christmas - which will be their big highlight (but unless they trim it, it will be nearly 3 hours including ad breaks!)
