Hi everyone! I hope this is the correct place to post a thread on this topic. If it’s not, you have my sincerest apologies and permission to delete it straight away
I guess I’ll start by giving a brief introduction of myself so that my questions later make more sense. I’m Austin, I’m 23, and I’ve just moved to London from the United States. I studied abroad in London on a few different occasions (first in early 2013), and during the summer of 2014 I met my now fiancé. We’re getting married this summer, and this is obviously the reason that I’ve moved to London for real this time.
Once we’re married and I’ve gone through another visa application, I’ll finally have the right to work in the U.K., so I’m trying to plan ahead and research different opportunities I may have once that time finally comes around.
So here’s the issue: I have no idea what my “dream job” is, so looking for examples of job opportunities online is turning out to be frustrating, as I don’t exactly know what it is I’m looking for. I have a bachelor’s degree in theatre that I completed in December 2015. It’s a general Bachelor’s of Arts degree which encompassed an overview of most aspects of theatre knowledge and production, but no specialization. I also have a minor in international business. I don’t list these degrees in order to make myself seem super qualified for any job, because the truth is that I have the impression that I might be under-qualified for most (but this might be due to my anxiety about job hunting in a new country where I have no work experience or contacts).
So my question is, where should I start? Is applying to be an usher at a West End theatre or working the box office of a fringe one a good place to look? Are these jobs difficult to obtain? Or is in in my better interest to continue my education by doing to graduate school or taking some sort of specialization course that might be offered? I’m not deluded into thinking that I’m going to find a great, high paying job that I actually love right away, or anytime soon for that matter. But any tips or advice on where I might start searching for ideas and opportunities would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and again, if asking these questions somehow goes against the board rules, feel free to delete the thread.
