Looking at the FAQ section of eurovision.tv, the 'Participating Broadcasters' pay a combined total of €6.2 million, which seems like an absolute bargain for 2 semi-finals of over two hours each, and the final, which can often be four hours long (and feel even longer). Then the host broadcaster tops-up the pot with anywhere between €10 and €20 million. Plus there are contributions from the host city/country, along with commercial revenue, which includes televoting and those £800 ticket packages. Maybe 2021 should be Australia's year, with just the contestants flying in early on a charter flight, before spending two weeks in quarantine. Even if the arena audience consists entirety of Sydneysiders, or wherever, it's not as though the acts would lack 'local' support! Big problem with that is 8pm in the Uk is 5am in Sydney so it won't be able to be live. |

When Eurovision was in Baku it started at 2am local time. EBU rules say it starts at 9pm CET. Millions of Aussies get up early in the morning to watch it live on TV. I think they’d make it work for a rare chance to see the ESC live.

When Eurovision was in Baku it started at 2am local time. EBU rules say it starts at 9pm CET. Millions of Aussies get up early in the morning to watch it live on TV. I think they’d make it work for a rare chance to see the ESC live. It started at 11pm local time.

The 2 shows last night I thought did well to cover the lack of an actual contest. Really enjoyed some of the elements including the Hallelujah in Jerusalem's empty streets. Although I think Johnny Logan was dressed a tad young for 64!!(that's my bitchy comment out of the way for today!)
The love shine a light theme seemed to work and enjoyed the group singing at the end.

Agree on all of that Ian including the bitchy comment  Also saw various people asking "What's Julian Assange doing on Eurovision?" when Johnny Logan appeared. Very impressed with how well it was put together technically given the obvious restrictions, much more complex than the recent BBC Bit Night In or the Lady Gaga organised US show. I was expecting a bit of a cheesefest but it actually managed to be quite moving. |

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening on BBC1 and then the A-Z with Rylan on BBC2 afterwards.
If it had been the actual concert then hopefully Iceland would have romped home. The whole concept, song and presentation was so quirky.
Oh and Johnny Logan has worn that ensemble before. I remember seeing him in it at Eurovision 60 at the Hammersmith Apollo 5 years ago and it looked as bad then.

I thought last night's coverage was pretty good - I thought it struck the right tone, it wouldn't have been right under the circumstances to have had a sequins-and-stardust type of show. Must admit to having had a little cry a couple of times... But now I have to decide whether to plan for Rotterdam 2021 (my tickets carry over), or take a year off until we see how things pan out for big gatherings... At least we know there will be a contest of some sort next year, they're planning various options including an audience-free one if they need to (given they have time to plan it, which they didn't this year).

No idea if this is true, but some people reckon that the reason the programme featured no contest element is that the broadcasters were covered by insurance for costs of the cancelled event, but this cover wouldn't apply if they did manage to run a contest of any form.
Also didn't realise till someone pointed out this morning that the Belgian act refused to take part in the Love Shine a Light performance as it didn't "fit with their repertoire"

I too was touched by a couple of moments
But I was not impressed by either of the two new songs.
They were out of place with the feel of the evening
And I could have done with more singing and less going on about the current situation. I wanted a bit more escapism I guess.
It did confirm my feeling that we weren't in for a great year of songs. I don't think it was ever going to be a memorable final.
