As some others here have enjoyed Matt Berry's work as Stephen Toast in Toast of London I'm wondering if anyone else has been watching Year of the Rabbit? A little harder to watch, full of cliche (albeit deliberate) but very enjoyable. I love the Joseph Merrick (Elephant Man) character interpreted as a flamboyant theatrical director (possibly a pun on the Merrick surname, referencing David Merrick). Freddie Fox's accent and character work is outstanding, especially in one scene where he plays a very posh London boy trained to be common cockney. Hilarious.
Some strong language (so you might want to avoid watching through speakers in work):
Also is that a Phantom reference I spy...

I really enjoyed this. Paul Kaye was particularly good. And Merrick is one of my new favourite characters in comedy. I believe they’re already working on a second series (although I’m not sure it’s been commissioned as yet).

I hadn't realised the series had finished, kept going to the website and inwards going 'ohhh, sigh'.

Yes - it's the always wonderful David Dawson. I thought the pace was a bit too fast in the early episodes, but once it settled down and you had more of a chance to warm to the characters it was really good. I hope they do another series. I think this slipped under the radar a bit as it went out at the same time as Berry's other series, What We Do In The Shadows on BBC2, though the peculiar title may not have helped.

Found What We Do... quite tedious in comparison to this. Agree on the pacing of the first couple of episodes. I think some of the hilarious absurdity works because it's almost plausible. How would someone have used a phone for the first time etc? Merrick is definitely the best character in comedy at the moment.

And it gets bonus points for upsetting Nigel Farage when he saw the assassination of a right-wing soapboxing character named Neil Fromage.
He described it as “totally sick and frankly irresponsible“. Well done, Channel 4!

Just watched the first 3 episodes tonight. I’m really enjoying it so far with some great laugh out loud moments. Matt Berry and Freddy Fox are a great double act as the detectives. Please give us a second series CH4!
