Hello!
As I'm sure you can guess from the username, I'm a graduate student who studies acting in the US and (thanks to being in a show at the Edinburgh Fringe) I'll be in London in both late July and late August. It's not my first time visiting the West End- I studied abroad in the UK 11 years ago. On that trip, I remember it being extremely easy to get tickets to whatever I wanted, so long as I showed up early to the box office and waited for what was the equivalent to a Broadway "student rush" ticket. As I've been researching things to see on my upcoming trip, however (like The Lehman Trilogy, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Appropriate, etc) I've noticed that most theaters have almost no affordable advance availability, and I've been unable to find information about any kind of "day-of" seats. While I'm aware of Fleabag's day-of seat policy, for example, I'm clueless as to how early I should show up. Friends who have recently visited the UK or who live there have all said it would be foolish to book in advance, because it's easy to get cheap seats as a student, but I'm concerned that waiting much longer will result in me being limited in my theatre-going options. Does anyone have any advice for how I should approach booking for this trip? Should I start buying whatever semi-affordable seats I can now?
I'll happily take recommendations as well (for London and Edinburgh). I love pretty much anything (be it a schmaltzy musical or a provocative new play). Things from the UK I've managed to see in the States that I've enjoyed pseudo-recently include Yerma, People Places and Things, and (via NTLive) Follies.
Thank you for any guidance!
