Anybody else watching this? Gorgeous photography and a strong cast including the wonderful Lesley Nichol in the grumpy and pompous matriarch role.Seen it all before of course and the script is somewhat staid and rigid, but a nice way to while away an hour.

I thought it was really really boring. And all the men looked the same, so I have no idea who was who. Apparently Gregory Fitoussi was in it, not that I recognised him.

Gurhinder Chada from Bend It Like Beckham is behind it and wanted a British Asian take on the likes of Far Pavilions/A Passage To India.Opened to a 2.5 million audience which isn’t great. At least it’s not as naff as the interminably boring Poldark or Midsomer Murders or that snore-fest with Martin Clunes as a Doctor in Devon or somewhere.Obviously,in my opinion, lol 😉

Bend it like Beckham was funny though, and had interesting characters. I even managed not to want to slap Keira Knightley. This was just tedious.
I rewatched Jewel in the Crown recently, now there is a fantastic piece of drama.

Oh yes,Jewel in the Crown was fantastic...produced by Granada TV in their heyday. Also produced the legendary Brideshead Revisited with Olivier,Anthony Andrews(who was also in the brilliant series,Danger UXB),Jeremy Irons and many more. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore!

....talking of Granada there is the great Jeremy Brett who made Sherlock Holmes his own imo and almost forgot the wonderful tv series,A Kind Of Loving which I now gratefully own on DVD thanks to the lovely people at Network. It stars the much underrated Clive Wood and the stunning Jo Whalley-Kilmer....suppose modern day drama series do have a lot to live up to compared to the old classics.Sorry, tangent over.

I've just watched episode 1. Its your typical Sunday evening period drama to be honest but beautifully shot. I've watched a lot worse.
What was the name of India based drama that Channel 4 did starring Julie Walters? No that one I really enjoyed.

Apologies,I spent a wonderful summer once many eons ago working in a pub in St Ives and years later used to work with Duke Of Edinburgh candidates in Perranporth and had a wild romance with a waitress at the big hotel on the headland in Newquay....so I love Cornwall but not Poldark and certainly not the dreary Mr Clunes....Drog yw genev!

Well, I've given Beecham Powders the benefit of two hours and that's all it's getting. The set up was confusing and slow. Why didn't he just tell his mother who the baby was and what happened to the baby's mother. But worse is what they've done to Lesley Nichol. Taking opium indeed. Mrs Patmore is not a junkie.

Only seen the first hour, but my God it’s terrible. How can actors who I know to be so good be SO bad in this?! So far only Marc Warren, Viveik Kalra and Kulvinder Ghir appear to be investing any energy at all into characterisation.

Due to the overwhelming and unprecedented support on the board for this show,ITV have already commissioned the next three series including a two hour special on Christmas Day.....lol

However, it won't be taking me along with it!!

Casting Tom Bateman will not have helped the boring-factor of this show. How does he get work?

^He has a twin brother called Merlin(I kid you not),so he probs gets lots of work as if by magic!

There is another Bateman brother - Ben.
But back to the show...
It really doesn't know what it wants to be. Some of the writing is sub-'It ain't half hot Mum' and many of the performances even worse.
Lesley N seems to have forgotten how to act at all - embarrassingly poor work from her
Bateman - they clearly wanted some sort of Indiana Jones look for a lot of his outfits. And he clearly has to get his shirt off as much as possible. But the character is a non-entity.
I won't be bothering with future episodes unless I hear great things from others.

It does seem to have a "Carry On .." vibe about it, only without the jokes. I am half expecting to see Kenneth Williams turn up as a Maharaja.

It’s unintentionally hilarious so I’m sticking with it just for laughs. In the second episode there was a bizarre and unnecessary cut between one angle on the lead and another. For a minute I wondered who the random third person was who’d joined the conversation with Marc Warren - but then I realised it was just Bateman basically talking to himself....

Also now watched the 2nd episode. Have to agree the acting is pretty dire isnt it. Will probably stick with it as it fills an hour when I've not nothing else to watch.
