Can I ask what it is about masks and social distancing that people don't want to partake in? I know it's a pain, but we should realistically think that masks are likely going to be a requirement (or at the very least strongly advised) for at least the rest of 2021...
If only it was as simple as "don't want" for some of us.
Without disclosing my exact medical history, there are valid mental and physical issues for people to decide it's just not worth experiencing something if they have to wear a face covering. I've actually given the masks a really good go, wore one all winter when out on short trips but there is no way I am able to cope with one during summer months or wear one for hours at a time (to get to London I've got a bit of a journey both ways on public transport/in taxis) so although I'm got an exception card on my phone, I'm finding it more suitable to my own personal circumstance to continue to shield the majority of the time even though I no longer need to do it as much as I originally was thanks to the vaccine.
I am lucky in that I can choose to stay at home and have people looking out for me, and don't have to be wearing one all day for work weather I'm able to easily cope with it or not.
Just hoping theatre will still exist when (if?) we are ever finally free.

(for clarity I'm not trying to start an argument or anything - I'm just genuinely interested!)
It's a fair question, I don't mind answering.

Thanks maskoftragedy for your reply - really interesting to hear, and I hope we'll be back to normal soon so that everyone can enjoy theatre normally again !

I've been to a few events now where masks must be worn - it's not a big deal for me, though I'd like the performers, actors, singers to see and feel the audience love through smiles and rowdy cheers. Those days will return. Until then, Cinderella first preview this evening and I wish all of the cast well and hope they know that the audience (albeit curious) wants them to succeed.

I don't know, when I see the gov letting those football fans gather the way they did but still refusing to allow theatres to fully open while also imposing other restrictions I am fearful. I feel like this gov in particularly despise theatre and would be happy to see it collapse but I'm having a bad day so am probably getting overly dramatic.

No problem. I cannot wait to burn my face masks. I'll have a little party for it when the time comes.

I am genuinely excited and will be checking on here all evening to hear reactions (I'm not seeing the show, just love when this place starts buzzing with new productions opening)

I’m really excited for tonight. First time back in a theatre in well over a year and even longer since I’ve been in London. Wether the show ends up being great or terrible I know I’m still going to enjoy the evening.

I'll second that - though hearing Bad Cinderella rock the Curve last week in Leicester, I'm thinking (hoping) it's going to be great.

Either way, how exciting to have a new, big budget ALW show premiering in the West End with such a killer cast. Very much looking forward to going tomorrow - have very high expectations and I'm very hopeful.

Me too!
I am hoping for a show that will be absolutely bonkers but in the best way and for anyone going to these first shows to please post detailed full reports so the rest of us can live vicariously through you.
Crossing my fingers tonight's debut will go as best as possible for cast/crew/audience.

I hope someone records an audio tonight, because I'm dying to hear it, suffocating here in the dark!

106 pages of discussion prior to the first preview. Is that a record? Not even halfway to the record - the Hamilton thread got to page 261 before first preview! This show doesn't sound like my thing at all, I've disliked everything I've heard from it so far, but I wish the cast and crew well tonight.

Not bad to come second place to Hamilton though.

Was that before the world premier though, or the London opening? I'm also very excited to hear what people thought, and for the album when it finally comes out! It'll be ages before I go to London.

Its been so long since ive travelled anywhere, that I'm on the wrong bus to the theatre. A great start. Still its only a short walk from Waterloo. Fingers crossed it's more Sunset/Evita rather than a Stephen Ward/LND.

What do you think that 'thing' is at the back of the set? Well maybe it IS the main set.
It looks like layers of wood, but giving the effect of material/velvet. Feels like it should move and undulate but doubt that it does.
Just worries me a bit, that it's just 'some design' rather than functioning or taking a role in the narrative.

Okay, so I'm sat in row D. Backdrop seems solid/fixed - possibly a curtain. Panelled model buildings lit aqua, purple, pink/red, copper and teal. Proscenium covered I'm ornate gilded mouldings - possibly left overs from the new touring Phantom set in Her Majesty's? Small footlights around the curved edge of stage which is at same height as SOR. Plush purple seats are comfy, theatre is spotless, and all covid measures observed without spoiling the experience.
