ALW has talked this show up for months. The critics heaped praise but audiences just didn’t buy into the critics or the hype generated. Will Broadway audiences embrace what will be considered a flop musical - well that would be a first if they did? Sad for the cast as they truly gave it their all not helped by Fennell’s book which contained so many implausible storylines.

Could they put ‘South Pacific’ in here as a filler?

Poor communication about closures is not as uncommon as you might think. I'd assume it was the rule rather than the exception. In any job, information about changes is released when it's convenient for the people in charge, not when it's convenient for the people most affected.

Could they put ‘South Pacific’ in here as a filler? It's already doing a London run at Sadler's Wells in the summer so it's unlikely.

Looks like Alice Fearne was part of the new cast as well.

I meant after that, but it would leave it dark for too long. Have ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ or ‘Beetlejuice’ got homes yet?

What ever happened to the Mean Girls west end transfer? I always thought I could picture Mean Girls in the Gillian Lynne.

I saw this today before the news broke. I've had an on/off relationship with the show - sometimes I've loved it, other times it has irritated me. Today was really good - slick, well sung, numerous understudies on. I'm sorry for the actors, crew, musicians and FOH, but unlike Cats this show didn't have nine lives. I think the Broadway version will be very different.
As I know it won't happen, I'd love to see the Regent's Park production of JCS go in to the Gillian Lynne Theatre.

Summer Strallen’s on instagram live talking about it. Missed the start but seems she was going to be playing the Queen in the new cast. Found out via a text message from a friend saying how sorry she was about the news. She didn’t know what she was talking about, and had only had a wig fitting on Thursday. Carrie sent a message saying she was off today and only found out second-hand through another cast member and one of the musicians.

ALW doesn't across well if he didn't even inform the leading lady!

And now has found out from social media that the show is closing. She said that her agent did receive an email today before the social media posts but as it is a Sunday naturally her agent wasn’t working and therefore didn’t see the email.

I'll take the minority view here and feel badly for ALW. He was in a lot of ways a one-man PR team for the show during the height of the pandemic when there was nothing to watch or go to or anything new, he dropped songs, videos about the process and gave people something to look forward to when there wasn't much at all. Then he shouldered a lot of the financial burden - the likes of which we'll never fully know - with COVID protocols, stop/go open/close over and over (which also had to affect ticket sales... I haven't been back to Broadway myself because of so much unpredictability among a lot of other things) Add a seemingly non-stop whine fest from ungrateful cast members complaining all the time, it's not shocking that it didn't quite make a year.
As a score I've enjoyed listening to it. Having not seen it, I'll concede that doesn't always means it works on stage. Here's hoping that some distance and perhaps a new team, they'll be able to find more potential for this work.

I do wonder if ALW's media appearances might done more harm than good to Cinderella? Shows like Back to the Future, Moulin Rouge etc were all celebrating the return of live theatre whereas ALW was being a prophet of doom.

This is undoubtedly sad for the staff, cast and crew. But they cannot have been that surprised.
Heavy discounts over the Easter holidays were a clear sign of a show in trouble.
Cinderella as a story (even when improved by Ms Fennell) is one that is tied to the panto season for the majority of UK theatregoers.
I know Aladdin has a similar link but the Disney version was so far removed from the panto that it didn't feel festive.
Cinderella in any version will have to work really hard outside of the November to January window. It would have to be really special. And this just wasn't special.
I couldn't finish listening to the recording. The music wasn't good enough to make me stick with it through to the end of the half.
The book, as described on here, just sounded lame and not a substantial improvement on the original tale.
The costumes looked ok. The set just looked flat.
There was nothing to entice me to see it.
I don't think it is salvageable unless a new book is written and the score massively revised. I don't believe ALW will achieve that.
I rate Stephen Ward as a better piece than this. And that is almost beyond redemption.

Carrie didn’t even find out from the production. She wasn’t on today and was only informed by other cast members and crew. No one from the production contacted her before the info was put online. Really really shocking stuff.
