Oh, I bet he’s livid. What happens next? More backhanded criticism of the cast? Another closure? Gillian Lynne on rightmove?
I can see how this might not get nominated for stuff, but for the instantly forgettable Back to the Future to be up for best new musical is just strange.

The hope fletcher fans have already started complaining Let them complain all they want. Personally, I’m angry that Vinny Coyle wasn’t nominated for being the hunkiest baker ever. If anyone was snubbed from the show it’s him.

The musical totally underperformed except for 1 nom…does this mean ALW is no longer liked by the voters?? Is it a new era?

Huh? I hope you’re not comparing this to Hamlet? 🤣 I’m saying Kenny is responsible for the best thing about the show - the revolving auditorium! I was referring to Kenny’s production of Hamlet that it was initially done for.

Might’ve been the material but I saw nothing on stage to warrant Olivier nominations anyway. VHB was fun for the first few minutes then the voice and gurning got boring. The face pulling put me in mind of a certain drag Queen from Funny Girls, Blackpool who is hilarious in that context taking the mick out of musicals but not in a musical that’s aiming for earnest light entertainment

How would the musical fare when it crosses Stateside? I think that had it been showered with many nominations at the Olivier, it will be easier to sell to Broadway audiences. But that’s not meant to be. Maybe Back to the Future will fare better…

Honestly, sadly most people over here in the states don’t even know what the Olivier Awards are, especially the average tourist who would be buying tickets to this based solely on name recognition of the title or ALW’s name.

But that’s not meant to be. Maybe Back to the Future will fare better… Back to the future knows what it’s trying to be and delivers on all fronts. Cinderella is a mess. Is it a musical for children? An adult panto? A pastiche? It’s too long, the script has huge black holes of muddled plot, two of the most vanilla leads written (acted?) with no discernible chemistry and a cast that are best known for bad mouthing the boss. At no point can it be compared to the others nominated including BTTF which is a feel good nostalgic party at the very least and has wow factor special effects. Audiences love BTTF. Cinderella, even on this board has divided opinion with most finding fault somewhere. I’m not sure Broadway audiences will get it never mind love it.

Saw it tonight. I did like a lot of it, some of the jokes were very funny. It didn't quite work overall though, and I don't think the songs are at all memorable.

Surely this will affect potential Broadway investors though. Paint Never Dries got zero Olivier Awards and that coupled with the negative buzz over here killed off Broadway plans (which ALW kept claiming were alive and well until long after they were, in reality, dead in the water).

I mean, time will tell but from what I’m hearing, the plans are already well underway for a transfer.

The fact that Back To The Future got a Best New Musical nomination over Cinderella is hilarious. BTTF is a terrible musical, but at least its entertaining with some amazing staging.

I don't actually think it should *win* but it does seem quite a slight to not be nominated when BTTF is - I don't care what kind of a spectacle that is, as a musical it's dire. VHB deserved her nomination, I'm not surprised CHF didn't get hers. Disappointing to see some of the glee at the lack of nominations, and the posters wishing for it to fail is just quite sad to read. I imagine the bad feeling towards ALW & CHF played a part in the lack of noms and certainly the criticisms and maybe some of that's deserved but at the end of the day it's an original non-jukebox musical with a talented cast/crew and plenty of people who do enjoy it, so I'd love to see less of the getting out the popcorn hoping for failure. Why anyone hopes for a failure is beyond me - it's people's jobs. If you don't care for it just go see something you do like... and, I dunno, hang out in the threads for those shows? This turned into a rant sorry but I do find some of the repeated posts odd... I mean, there are shows I don't care for but I don't tend to spend my time banging on about it in those threads, cos why would I? I know I'm wasting my time saying this but whatever... not joining the echo chamber.

Well said. I really don't get the repeated negativity to the show on this forum. Everyone I've known who has seen it has really enjoyed it and I gave it four stars on here after seeing it last year. Agreed it's not up there with ALW's finest but for me it was a fun show.

VHB deserved her nomination, I'm not surprised CHF didn't get hers. I agree the musical aspects of BTTF aren't great, but if the category is for the Best Musical taking everything into consideration: set, effects, plot, performances, dramatic effect etc. and not just what was written on the page, I think it's right that it should be nominated over Cinderella. It shouldn't be winning anything for its book or its songs, but I think its strengths far outbalance its weaknesses so as a show I think it deserves a nod. Cinderella - in my personal opinion, of course - doesn't have enough of those strengths to outshine its (many) weaknesses. Having said that, I don't think either should ever be winning a best new musical award.
