I don't know if I've been locked down too long, or had a bang on the head, but I today braved the inclement weather, the remnants of the Tube strike and Covid, and took advantage of the New Year sales to finally see this - and really enjoyed it! It is bonkers, as CHF said, and is a bit over-long, but it doesn't claim to be great art and it's fun, just what I needed.
Incidentally, the best behaved audience I've seen in a long while!

Paywall. Can someone give us the gist of it please? West End star Carrie Hope Fletcher has spoken of how the cast of Cinderella pulled together following controversy caused by comments Andrew Lloyd Webber made about the production’s performers. Fletcher was speaking to The Stage at the WhatsOnStage Awards, where she addressed the fallout following comments made by Lloyd Webber, who told BBC Radio 4 that the show’s cast should not forget they work in the “service industry”. Fletcher - who picked up an award for her starting role in Cinderella – said: “The cast and the company and everyone who works in that building have been unbelievable from start to finish, and I feel like when you are thrown into slightly awkward situations you all pull together to make the show even better than it was before.” She added: “Because the only thing that matters is the audience, especially after the pandemic – and our show is so fun, and so off the wall, and camp and so bonkers, it’s exactly what audiences need right now after the horrendous, dreary two years we have had.” She said after the controversy, “the cast all silently looked at each other around the room” and vowed give the audience “the show they have come to see”. Fletcher also spoke about returning to the stage following two years of disruption caused by the pandemic. “Getting back on stage has been incredible. We have had the stop/start with Cinderella, which has been really really difficult and each time we’ve stopped it’s felt more heartbreaking, but it just means when we get back on stage it means all that much more,” she said, adding: “The audiences have been incredible and have showed their love at the end of every show.” Well she didn’t reveal much of the ‘controversy’ at all did she? Click bait

A friend went to see this last week, said it felt like a teen pantomime. It's an apt description. It certainly felt like that to me.

Saw tonight and weirdly didnt hate it?! Sure its not amazing but it was enjoyable, and Rebecca Trehearn and the stepsisters, and Victorias accent, are so entertaining.
Why is the town so horny?
The problem with the show is the marketing is completely at odds with the show. You're expecting a romantic, "serious" show, but its so camp, satirical and NOT family friendly. Chip n dales??!!
The dialogue and lyrics were extremely hit or miss, but I was (unfortunately) reminded that damn ALW can write an enjoyable melody.

Oh they’re there. It just takes a few months of listening to the cast recording to fall for them. But for every swoonsome classic there are 3 nightmarishly awful plinky plonky non-starters, or the godawful hunks song. Belleville sounds like a right nightmare to live in!

For someone supposedly so ‘of the moment’ fennel is remarkably dated. ‘Hunks’? Sounds like a throwback to the 80s. And agree. I cringed my way through that song and choreo.

I've heard the soundtrack, I did like the Prince's song.

I enjoyed them in the moment but apart from Bad Cinderella couldnt have hummed one as I left (although I didn't enjoy that one!)
I agree I liked the Princes solo, and the "mob song" preceding Bad Cinderella I thought was actually really good and staged very cinematically.
I'm not one to usually shy away from shirtless men in leather biker shorts but it still absolutely baffles me for a town so horny and raunchy they dont like Cinderellas actions?
The costumes were lovely, the tulle budget must have been enormous!

Ah, you meant "enjoyable", apologies. Well, I guess that's subjective.

Saw this on Sunday as part of my ten days in London and theatre binge. Absolutely dreadful from start to finish. One of the worst shows I've ever seen, and I found myself laughing at it, not with it, throughout. If it transfers to New York, I'm sure the critics will eviscerate it.

Well, I guess many people will have a similar reaction which, from my point of view, is unfortunate. You mention that it is one of the worst shows you have ever seen - I would be interested to know which other musicals you feel ALW's Cinderella is comparable to?

I’m afraid my examples are mostly NYC based, so not sure if you know them. But I’d put it up there with IN MY LIFE and LESTAT, tho LESTAT had a pretty good score.

Honestly I'm hoping that if it comes to NYC it can find a star who's a bit more professional. The sophomoric behavior on and off line was ridiculous. To me it all started to turn for her with that West End Live concert. It seemed from then on she was looking for a scapegoat (as she did for her awful performance that day) and decided to ramp up the drama on ALW who, from what was reported, was not out of line for saying to the cast that they needed to be more professional.

Finally seen the show for myself. The star of this is definitely Sean Kenny!

Huh? I hope you’re not comparing this to Hamlet? 🤣

If this does transfer to NYC, I wonder if they will make some attempt to stage the ball scene similar to London, or at least just not on the proscenium stage. Honestly its one of the best parts of the production, even if it has nothing to do with the show.

WHOA. I AM SHOCKED. But if I were only giving one nomination to the show it would go to Victoria, also.

Just 1 Olivier Award nomination - lol! ALW will be FUMING And not even for the production itself - a supporting actress nomination for Victoria Hamilton-Barritt.

But also - Congrats to Victoria for a well deserved nomination. She’s my favorite thing about the show.
