Anyone else?
Toby Jones, one of the co-writers, largely reprises the role of Lance in Detectorists, with Eponine from Les Miserables as his daughter, and Marcia Warren as his mother.
It's a slow-burner, but episode 3, which has not yet been broadcast in the 'traditional' way, is a work of quiet brilliance - every word, every silence, every look, every tiny gesture has been carefully crafted.
The whole series has dropped, as I believe the young people say, on BBC iPlayer, so for genuinely the first time ever, I'm going to watch the remaining episodes back-to-back. (Admittedly there are only three left.)
Get me belatedly joining the 21st century!!!

Enjoyed the first episode of this which was not at all what I expected based on the trailer. The other co-writer is playwright Tim Crouch. (as Cardinal Pirelli just beat me to point out!)

One of those slow developing series, aim was to watch a couple of episodes and ended watching them all.
The subtlety as the humanisation of immigration and the impact we have as individuals on peoples lives was excellently portrayed as an accidental encounter changes everything and snaps all impacted out of their ennui, I found the culmination of the undertaker arc quite emotional.
There seems to be a plethora of shows classed as comedies which are more like 30 minute drama series, Back to Life which I have also binge watched this week falls into the same category, both of these are definitely not comedies in the traditional sense and maybe marketed differently would have a greater viewing figures.

I've watched three so far (two back to back yesterday) and think it's marvellous (I'm not reading your comments until I've finished it). A shout out too for the cinematography/editing, which brings to mind photographer Martin Parr's work chronicling life in seaside towns.

Thank you for this thread. I would have missed this without it. Am pacing myself, watched episode one tonight (followed by the Beyoncé documentary because, variety) and loved it. The lantern sailing across the sky...what a beautiful image.
Toby Jones is just so watchable.

I've only seen the first one so far but loved the subtlety of the comic observations. And I know Bognor so well it's fun picking out where the locations are!
Right or wrong, I laughed out loud at the isolated shot of the person on the mobility scooter travelling along the seafront...

Did you notice a part in the first episode where he’s driving along the seafront and suddenly goes past a Las Iguanas? Where on earth did they take him for that 2 second clip?! Don’t think there’s even one in Chichester. I haven’t been back to Bognor town centre for a while so maybe there’s something similar-looking there now I don’t know about. |

The ingredients were there, but I really couldn't get into this. It felt like a show carefully constructed to tick all of the quirky visual, audio, story & character cliches of modern indie cinema & tv, but missing the heart that sits within the best of those films & shows. In my opinion this got nowhere near the quiet melancholy beauty of something like Detectorists.

Watched a couple of episodes of this last night. At the moment I don’t see how it could be described as ‘comedy’ at all! But it’s very compelling. How awful is the brother?!
