What booking are you looking forward to most Backdrifter ? We went to the The Kitchin last year, incredibly good meal. We're going to Castle Terrace this year to change it up and because whilst Leith is nice, it felt like a long journey to get there. Hmmm, hard to pick out just one. Coma would be up there, as would Shenanigan but the latter is slightly shaky in that Kitson's made it clear it's far from finished and while I usually enjoy the looser work-in-progress stuff it doesn't match the more structured end product. And I can only go to the first performance! In Loyal Company and Heroin(e) For Breakfast seemed to get very good reviews for previous runs so I'm looking forward to them. The only two out-and-out comedy shows I've booked are Stewart Francis and Matt Forde, both of whom I like a lot so I'm hoping those will be highlights. What are your most-anticipated ones? Yeah I ate at Kitchin once before, last autumn and it was absolutely superb. You probably know Castle Terrace is a sister restaurant, also very good and another favourite of mine. Based on my one experience of Kitchin it edges into the lead, but while I don't find Leith too much of a trek I'm not actually very keen on the area. I'm not sure why that is though. Some nice choices there. The Darkfield production, Flight, last year had a lot of people talking. I'd completely missed Stewart Francis - going to book him for sure now - thanks! Veering down the Musical route more than straight-play-theatre myself. Looking forward to You and I (based on Buried last year being great) but I'm going to check this out next weekend just incase it isn't any good and it can free up a spot. The Canary and the Crow looks exciting (but not getting my hopes up as the last Middle Child piece I saw I hated) and from what I've heard of Tokyo Rose, I think this could be a winner. Comedy-wise Stewart Lee is most anticipated. Quite excited for both Eddie Izzard shows too. There are so many clashes of things I want to see over the 4 (and a bit) days I'm there, so trying not to get too excited about much to evade disappointment. Meeting my parents up there who are fans of Tom Kitchin so one of his eateries is a must. Scran and Scallie looks nice but just a bit too pubby for a real treat. I think you're right in that Kitchin does top the list. It's great to be able to have a Michelin-star 3-course lunch and then scoop a fast food trailer tea off a paper plate in George Sq later on.

Ha! With Brown, im going to the Stand and Musik, which are on the 'right side' of it, but I annoyingly have a 2 hour gap which hasn't got much I like playing I need to try to fill. There's usually some free fringe stuff going on around there too. I've found the Fringe app handy for last minute "stuff near me in the next hour" -type searching for some gap fillers. Thanks will give that a go!

I can highly recommend 'I' m a Phoenix Bitch' by and starring Bryony Kimmings. Its something else!
I'll also be seeing Alan Bisset's new play. I'm not sure how we'll known he is on this board but he's a Scottish author turned playwright and penned some comedy gold with his 'Moira Monologues' He's a great guy too!

I really liked Flight. I didn't see Seance, and missed its run at the Vaults this year as well, annoyingly. Another thing that impressed me about Kitchin on my visit last year was TK's presence which you don't often see with chefs with a public profile. The lunch is great value especially considering the various extra little bits that come with it. Getting the matched wines bumps it up of course but I can't resist it. I had an absolute killer cocktail there which I hope I can recall assuming they still have it. I totally agree, despite the extravagant lunch I'll no doubt be looking for something off some stall or other that evening. I know what you mean about Scran but I'd like to try it sometime. Isn't there another TK place now, maybe in Bruntsfield?

It may, or may not, be of interest but Edinburgh is the focus of Remarkable Places to Eat on BBC2 tomorrow night at 9pm. I don't know which one, but one of Tom Kitchen's establishments is featured.

Hope it is better than the Venice programme. They mentioned two restaurants in Venice, one, Florian, you would be bonkers to eat in and the other v small and you can’t get in. Then one on Burano I wouldn’t bother with personally. Edinburgh deserves better than this as there as several good places to eat there.

Last night, I went to see the first preview of You and I: A New Musical at Hope Mill Theatre. From the team that brought Buried (A folk musical about two serial killers falling in love), Colla Voce have produced a new musical, You and I - exploring love, loss and life. It is similar to Buried both musically and stylistically, this time with a really touching journey for the central character Fran. In it's preview stages it's a little bit scatty in it's presentation and some of the humour is a bit forced but I think they'll iron this out effectively over the next week and I'm really looking forward to seeing this once it's matured further into it's run in Edinburgh. You and I seems to be getting a lot of attention with it's inclusion on a lot of high rating recommendation's so I expect this to do well.

Arrived this morning. Two relatively quiet days first. I saw Midsommar at the Cameo this afternoon.
Bloody hell...

I have my first show on Thursday (Unfortunate), and I'll probably be seeing Cruel Intentions next Thursday, and Friendsical on either next Monday or Tuesday.
What Girls Are Made Of is scheduled for the 20th for me.
I've been commuting in by train for rehearsals for my show and it hasn't been the easiest due to infrequent service to my town, and delays on almost a nightly basis.
We have our first show on Friday and we run until the 11th and I'm very excited about it all.

Yesterday - excellent meal at The Kitchin, and disappointing 1st production, How Not To Drown (Traverse). At Summerhall now queueing for entry to Buzz, 1st of 7 today through to midnight. This should be more like it!

I saw Unfortunate at Underbelly tonight and MY GOD I loved it. I was literally laughing from beginning to end, even when we walked into the theatre and "Anaconda" was playing.

I'm working it this year after saying I wouldn't ever again. All shows at my venue now teched and open so I get to start only doing half days and can actually see stuff.

9 days til I land and pretty much everything on my list looks to be doing very well this week/selling out the run. Made a rule not to book too much this year to allow some flexibility but feel like I might end up missing some bits. We'll see.

I’m starting to struggle with the heat. My venue has no aircon and our costumes are heavy suits with jackets.
I saw All Shook Up today which was very impressive, I think I’m seeing 13 tomorrow, and I have Cruel Intentions, Honest Amy and Men with Coconuts booked too.

Andrew O'Neill is my favourite comic so him for sure. Gonna hit up Johnny and The Baptist, Coma which is Darkfield's new thing, Manuel Cinema's Frankenstein, Tokyo Rose... I'm generally a bit rubbish at finding stuff, and then it clashing with my work schedule. Caught Peter Gint tonight (freebie through a friend). Act 1 too long with not enough adventure but really rather enjoyed acts 2/3. 3.5 stars, needs cutting down.

Peter Gint interested me initially but the 3 1/2 hours scared me off somewhat, least you got a comp. Tokyo rose is high up on my list too, got a great buzz about it.

Any top tips for the fringe? I’m heading for a couple of days for the first time - both excited but slightly terrified!
