Heathers was chosen as 'Best New Musical' over Hamilton... Well it *was* better so...

When Heathers fans go after people on Twitter, saying Hamilton isn't a new musical, when both shows originally premiered IN THE SAME YEAR.

Something was up with the Heathers performance, it did not sound great.

The fact that Heathers beat Hamilton really tells you all you need to know about the calibre (or lack thereof) of these awards, never mind the other crazy decisions...

Can I watch the performances somewhere?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I would be WAY less salty about the WOS Awards if they were only honest enough and self-aware enough to go by the name 'the WOS Popularity Contest'.

Vanessa Redgrave, best supporting actress for The Inheritance? That's the jaw-dropper for me. Lordy, who was she up against?

You are joking? Vanessa Redgrave? Her performance was very poor the night I saw it. Her accent all over the place, mumbles as usual so lost most of her lines and a somewhat cliched, obvious interpretation. That she is still on stage ok but award?

I do find it quite funny though when people say things like “it’s a popularity contest so it doesn’t count/matter” but then still get really annoyed when the things they wanted to win don’t. I’m actually surprised that Carrie and Heathers managed to beat out Hamilton, given that they didn’t manage it in the Broadway World Awards. Didn’t expect Little Shop to win so much (really didn’t enjoy it when I saw it), but I suppose it had more name recognition than others in most of the categories it was nominated in

And while I’m at it I might as well repeat what I said at the time that Patti LuPone was the only one whose words were lost in Company. I didn’t like the show but I could hear the rest of their lyrics ok. I thought her performance was tired and obvious.
Looks like WOS decides the awards on something other than actual performance. I can’t comment on the other musicals except that Hamilton would take some beating. The main acting awards ok I suppose. Sophie O was pretty good.

I had to get off social media as it was all too much. So many people posting exactly the same thing.
"Look at the costumes" "What an amazing performance"
Very rarely accompanied by any photos so we could not look or enjoy anything.
Strange how an awards show totally voted by the public excludes the public on the night.
It can't be that hard to organise a live feed can it?

Remember it's also a money making exercise for the company, and they do sell tickets, so broadcasting it online at a decent enough quality would probably cost too much.

I'm calling it now. Hiddleston will win best actor next year. Probably. The most famous people just win the awards anyway.

It is literally a popularity contest though, moreso than other awards which at least pretend that awards are dished out on artistic merit as opposed to which nominees get the most votes by a self-selected portion of the general public. Maybe the "WhatsOnStage People's Choice Awards" as a compromise name...

She really laid into her and finished off by saying she was lucky that Patti didn't notice it. She also had a go at one of the Hamilton cast for doing the same later in the evening.

What I want to say, is this: Rosalie was robbed. Company was robbed. That is all. To be fair, CHF deserves the award sheerly for having to deal with the crazies and daily mental fan encounters throughout. Company won where it excelled; Elliots direction. What did you think about the choreography of Company, should it have won?

Also, it seems a little convenient that Heathers wins Best New Musical and was able to announce a new tour and London production the same night... *strokes chin*

Like any awards show, I think we're all being a bit sniffy because our favourites didn't win the awards we thought they should. But at least WhatsOnStage don't really pretend that the awards aren't voted for by the great unwashed (for bad or good). That does makes some of the howlers given out by the Oliviers even more ridiculous if they're supposed to be on artistic merit rather than popularity though.

I have no problem with the WOS awards in terms of voting- it's totally transparent that the public are voting, and why shouldn't we have a theatre awards voted for by the people buying tickets? yes those with the loudest fanbase will always win out, but hell Heathers was incredibly popular.
But also for balance Marianne Elliott won for an artistically daring experiment in musical theatre, so it's not just the CHF tween fans of the world that are voting (and that MIss Patti won as well proves the Queen vote is alive and well in theatre).
Yes they could rebrand and make more out of being a 'people's awards' but honestly as above at least WOS aren't pretending to be all high brow and better than the great unwashed who are paying for tickets.
