To Break In A Glove won't be missed, but the others are more surprising.

Also the track listing shows that Anybody Have A Map, Good For You, To Break In A Glove and Disappear have all been cut from the movie. Shame about them cutting Good For You.

I was disappointed when I first read they were cutting songs for the film, but I can live with those 4 being removed. I would've thought Disappear would stay, but I guess it doesn't say anything that several of the other songs don't.
'Waving...' sounds pretty much the same, I'm feeling like they might've overdone the drumming sounds in the new orchestration but Ben sounds great.
'YWBF' feels even more anthemic in the last 90 seconds than the stage version, and Ben's lines somehow feel more heartfelt and tender. I cried AGAIN. This film may ruin me.

Does seem a strange cut..... I suspect it's because Julianne Moore can't sing it. Makes me worry for 'So Big/So Small' but that is an easier sing, she'll probably speak-sing most of it.

I don't think anyone will shed a tear for To Break in a Glove but shame that Anyone Got a Map has been cut.

They've absolutely cut Good For You because Julianne can't sing it (which puts the fear of God in me for So Big/So Small as it's the emotional height of the whole show).

I don't think anyone will shed a tear for To Break in a Glove but shame that Anyone Got a Map has been cut. It's actually one of my favourite songs from the show. Think it's really nice. The lyrics annoy me a bit in the moral part "Cos there's a right thing in everything you do..." etc but I do like the song.

It's a shame Good For You has been cut as it's one of the only times Evan is actually held accountable for his terrible actions.

It's a shame Good For You has been cut as it's one of the only times Evan is actually held accountable for his terrible actions. They are fleshing out the ending for the film so that Evan is shown to make up for what he did. As for the stage version, 'Words Fail' explains why did he did it and how remorseful he feels.

Wow. I think I'm going to end up sitting crying throughout most of this film. (I haven't seen the stage show yet.)

So the reviews of the film haven't all been kind, but having spent 2 hours crying on and off into my red wine, I think it's safe to say I loved it. I have a lot of love for the show and score anyway, so perhaps I'm biased, but for me, it's fantastic.
Getting Ben's age out of the way first...it really doesn't matter. 5 minutes in, you don't notice and you won't care. Plus Jared is the same age as him, Zoe is only 3 years younger, and neither Amy Adams nor Julianne Moore look anywhere near their ages either (47 and 60), so I think it all works.
Ben is Evan, down to his core. The mannerisms, the way he holds himself, the way he delivers the lines...for me it's one of those actor/role combinations that is just a perfect fit. I think a lot of his songs were sung live which gives them a lot of emotion.
Alana's role has been fleshed out more, and she also has a new song written for the film, which blends well with the existing score. Jared has also been rewritten as a gay man, which works really well with his sassy comments in 'Sincerely Me', although he's not in it much after that.
Amy Adams and Julianne Moore are both brilliant as the two mothers wounded in different ways. I was worried Julianne wouldn't be able to sing 'So Big, So Small', but she delivers.
The ending is also changed from the stage version, and those people who felt Evan got away with his actions too easily will hopefully find this one more satisfactory, with a really gorgeous surprise.
If you hated the show, you won't like the film. You may find it saccharine, cloying, overly emotional, even manipulative. But if you've ever felt like an outsider, disconnected, unimportant, invisible, unheard, lonely or depressed, then I think it speaks volumes.

Unfortunately I felt kinda the opposite. Whilst I don’t think it’s as terrible as some of the reviews are making it out to be I didn’t really enjoy the movie. Overall I actually found it quite boring and at times uncomfortable to watch.
I think getting rid of Good For You and Disappear was a mistake. Pretty much after Sincerely Me it’s just slow song and slow song (including the new one for Alanah) and this just made the movie feel quite long and like I said boring. Apparently during a Q&A they revealed that they removed those songs as they were too theatrical but I think that’s exactly what this movie is missing. It’s taking itself so seriously. I think a good movie musical is one that truly embraces the fact it’s a musical and uses that to its advantage. Instead you sorta feel awkward when Ben Platt suddenly starts singing at the dinner table.
The relationship between Evan and Zoe actually felt kinda creepy to me and Evan came across kinda predatory. I think they would have been better off downplaying the relationship and cutting out Only Us in favour of keeping Good For You. I also don’t think that Zoe would have fallen for the version of Evan in this movie. He’s incredibly unlikeable.
And ultimately this movie just felt incredibly emotionally manipulative. Which kinda worked as I still cried at You Will Be Found. It really ramps up the anxiety and mental health plot lines and removes a large amount of the humour. You’d think a movie musical would be entertaining but I actually just found it quite heavy, depressing and uncomfortable to watch. I can’t see myself ever wanting to watch it again and yet I’d happily go back and see the stage production.

I'm wondering if I was just in a place tonight where I needed to shed a few tears and didn't realise it! Blame the wine 😂 It could do with a lighter tone during the latter half to break it up, I didn't register that but you're right. I've never liked 'Good For You' so didn't really miss that. I think it's a film you probably need to be in the right mood for, which may limit its success and the audience reaction. It did hit the mark for me though.

Sorry Karl didn't like it! I've struggled with mental health over the years and certainly didn't find it offensive. I'd be interested to hear if he hated the stage show for the same reasons, or just its transition to screen. But at the end of the day it's just opinion, same as mine. I haven't listened to a review of anything for years, everything is subjective. I hate some of the most acclaimed things and love some of the most reviled.

I know that I did, earlier in this thread, defend him as not being "too old" for this role on film given the usual average age of a teen in Hollywood casting terms, but my god that hair did him no favours. He would have looked much better if they'd kept his hair straight and maybe grown it out a little.
The weird perm makes him look like a middle-aged man.

Luckily the clothes they put him in and the way Ben carries himself do make him look younger.

Does Sam T do all shows ? He didn’t do the Wed and Sat matinees previously. Not sure if they are adding a Wed down the line but they’ll be doing 7 shows a week when it reopens.

I'm about a third of the way through the film at the moment. It takes some effort to buy into it, I must say.
"For Forever" was messy and felt jarring when the tiny breaks in reality crept through as they tried to keep it looking 99% like a man sitting at a table talking, so why he stood to point to the window and turn back is beyond me (and those shots of Platt looking like an excitable 5 year old running through the woods have burnt themselves onto my brain). However, on the flip side, I rather enjoyed If I Could Tell Her - probably as you could entirely believe Evan would sit/stand in those locations and think/sing about Zoe like that. I was preemptively cringing for the end of that, seems they struck a slightly different tone. Requiem also struck a decent note for me.
Enjoying the Murphy dynamics, generally.
Will report back when I've mustered up the energy to watch more...

Ooooft just read some of the reviews for this and it's being torn apart. Especially the casting of Platt and his performance, which is sad.
It may still make absolute bank at the box office, but unfortunately seems to be a unanimous critical failure.
I suppose sometimes a great leading stage performance just doesn't translate to screen. Makes you wonder doesn't it? Would Merman have been great on screen as Rose? Would Carol Channing actually have been a great screen Dolly?

I've only just started watching the film, but I like that the school pep band are playing 'Good For You' in the background of the first school scenes.

Definitely got better as it went on. I think it just took me quite a while to "buy into" it. The Murphy unit still feel very solid. I do like the little changes to plot they made, the fact that Alana was much more fleshed out (although at the expense of Jared, it must be said). The final third of the piece is its strongest. Without giving any spoilers away I did feel Evan had more "redemption" here than in the stage play.
How much of this was sung live? Some songs felt live, some felt played in.
The big emotional pivot moments of You Will Be Found and Words Fail hit the spot - Only Us had a very different dynamic here due to the changes, but it works.
Platt I thought did a solid job here - doesn't deserve the slating he's had for the performance (although jury is still out as to whether he should have been, ahem, cast, or not). Stand out for me was Kaitlyn Dever's Zoe - this version gave her much more room to breathe than the stage version does.
