I must admit to thinking it strange that they opted for Eastbourne rather than Brighton but then Brighton has had 2 amateur 20th anniversary productions in the last 6 months that especially midweek they couldnt give tickets away for. I know that Eastbourne has a rep for being an old people's place but isn't it also full of language schools? Here in Germany it's touted as one of those places to send your kids to for language holidays in English ("close to London! close to the sea!"). So perhaps they're hoping that bored school kids from all over the world will be glad to find something on offer that's not Bingo or an Elvis impersonator. It is indeed a place of many language schools. It even has a university campus.

I LOVED it at St James last week and am keen to catch it on tour again - so thanks for the Bromley info, I didn't realise it was that close.

RENT is my favourite musical of all time. I find the lyrics are really meaningful and there are several lines that have really stuck with me from when I worked on an amateur production of the show a couple of years ago. Particularly, "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss". It's terrible tragedy that Jonathan Larson didn't live to write many more musicals, but RENT truly is the perfect obituary to celebrate his life and work. I cannot wait to see this production when it tours next year! The lyrics mean a lot to me too which is why I was so disappointed seeing this on Saturday as I could barely understand a word they were singing. Luckily I know the lyrics but the person I was with didn't and then didn't have a clue what was happening. It was really frustrating as the tuning and energy were great. I might try it at another venue.

I know it's easy to get defensive about places you know well/are from, but can we remember not everyone on this board is from the UK? Viserys made a perfectly polite observation, I doubt you know much about specific towns in Germany and beyond. Come on everyone, play a little nicer please?

Youve completely misinterpreted i was having a dig at eastbourne, not what Viserys had said though having lived in Germany for 5 years your assumption isnt entirely correct. Apologies though if ive caused offence to anyone it certainly wasnt my intention and when i posted it i had no idea it would be interpreted in such a way Apologies viserys if you also took my comment in that way, I had taken your comment about eastbourne as humourous and was responding in the same manner.

I've apologised privately to infofreako but I'm also doing so publically. I misinterpreted what was written, and after a particualrly fraught day on here (not an excuse, but an explanation I hope) I clearly missed the humourous intent. I wasn't intending to upset anyone- quite the opposite. Anyway once again apologise to Infofreako for my being too quick to speak. I hope there's no bad feeling.

Seems that way. Seems to be plenty of it going round right now. Busy week for theatres.
On another note for those wanting cheaper tickets at short notice who can take a chance the St James twitter feed suggests day tickets at £37.50 for the next couple of days. Not sure if it will remain in place for the rest of the run and this does of course assume a contingency plan to get the show on tomorrow.

I just threw my three cents in why I thought that producers may think Eastbourne is a good place for a show that attracts a younger audience like Rent. I've never been there, so I have no clue what's it like, it's just that I keep hearing it touted for language schools, though again no real idea how many or how good they are.

Out of curiosity, with one performance shortened as a cast member had to go to hospital and last nights cancelled will those affected just be offered refunds and apologies as the run is sold out.

Eastbourne is a good place for a show that attracts a younger audience like Rent. I've never been there, so I have no clue what's it like, There's a sign on the approach road, viserys: "Dover for the Continent, Eastbourne for the incontinent." Ouch, lol. It's a shame so many seaside towns are struggling, though it's same in Germany really. Pensioner heaven, with the odd "cool" spot dotted somewhere in-between like Brighton there or St. Peter Ording here. I guess I'm part of the problem though as I prefer to flee to the Mediterranean on vacation if I want beach and (somewhat reliable) sunshine. And if I wanted my (non existant) kid to learn decent English, I wouldn't send him to Eastbourne but force him to watch TV and movies without godawful German dubbing. Might still pootle down to Eastbourne on my next summer (hah) trip to London in June to take a look around and do the famous walk to Beachy Head. Always happy to find day-trip destinations outside the city on my trips (that is, when the train there doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I still haven't managed to get to Winchester because of the extortionate fare). Anyway, back to topic

I've been in your neck of the woods before @emicardiff, but some day I'll come back and you can show me around Barry Island and we'll catch a show or two in the evenings.

Looks like the Matilda bug's hit Rent, 4 cast members ill, so tonight's performance will be a "concert" version.
EDIT" Didn't see earlier posts, so suppose a concert is better than a cancellation.

Rent going ahead tonight in a concert staging.
I have tickets for the show tomorrow afternoon. I hope they can put on the full production then.
After a couple of weeks ago when I saw Ragtime in concert unexpectedly due to cast indisposition I wouldn't like to make a habit of my theatre outings going that way, especially with the cost of the ticket for tomorrow's show.

My daughters due to take her boyfriend tomorrow as a birthday treat and is stressing about it as they have been really looking forward to seeing the full show. She doesnt want a stripped down version but wants him to still have his birthday treat. As their social media channels arent great how early tomorrow is a decision likely to be made?

The box office will email everyone regarding show changes. It's a two show day, so if they are going to the evening they will know a good few hours beforehand. If it's matinee I don't know, but after yesterday I would imagine the producers would want the cast to call in sick fairly early as they will have a lot of people to contact if they can't go ahead. I'm in a bit of a dilemma if they strip the show back as I want to see the full show since I spent a lot of money on a ticket, but there are not many other matinees that I haven't already seen and as I'm in London until my coach this evening there isn't much to do other than go to the theatre.

I've heard that those who got the concert version were refunded anyway. Which I find extremely nice
