Now I'm glad to realize we have seats in Row D, although I know the lyrics by heart anyway.
Lovely review, Steve! Makes me look forward to this even more now. Only three more weeks to revisit one of my all-time favourite shows!

awww, too bad. I'm sure there'll be a next time  Some day I'll come back to Moscow, too, but not before I've learned some Russian, so I won't sit in the theatre again thinking "what the hell is happening"  |

So, as stated in my previous post, I stood in a queue (froze my friggin') bollocks off in the process only to be offered a return that was way out of my price range.
After posting my frustration over this, the lovely Flim Flam made contact with a much more reasonable priced spare ticket and I finally got to see this production of Rent! Yay!
Now I'm just gonna come out and say it. Officially I and a 'Rent head" I have been for 20 years after being lucky enough to first see it on Broadway with the original cast.
I then saw it again in Sydney.
I have the original cast recording, a fridge magnet, a hardback book, a copy of the movie and the final performance filmed live on Broadway. Thus my need to see this again. And I am so pleased that I did. Again, thank you Flim Flam.
And it didn't disappoint. This is a dynamic young cast who, despite the size of the St. James' Theatre made use of the available space. At one point they were so close you were mere inches from this case who truly worked their socks off. And there is a lot going on.
For me, Billy Cullum a Mark really stood out. And despite all that was going on throughout the show, the stand out moment for me (which is something I never really got before) was how Mark was on the outside- "Who's with his camera? Alone". this one never seemed more apt than in this performance.
Shanay Holmes as Joanne was also excellent. Interestingly this was the first production I've seen where the character of Collins was portrayed by a white guy. I'm sure it's happened before, it' just the first time that I've seen it. I guess if vocally you can perform it and act the role, who cares, right?
Angel. What a great, loving and giving character. Gone is the traditional Christmas outfit. In this one Layton Williams is (basically) bare chested and much more cleavage was on display than usual.
On the topic of costumes, there was a nice twist for Joanne's Over The Moon performance.
Also, do not underestimate the ensemble. From memory, there are six, the males and three females and each one had a moment to shine vocally. Especially in Seasons of Love.
I was also luck enough to catch the (real) rose thrown into the audience during La Vie Bohem.
And after every 'big' well know number, thunderous applause and a well deserved standing ovation.
Even the final bows were great. There were no stars, everyone was equal.
Upon talking with the lovely Film Flam during the intermission I couldn't help but take in the fact that this theatre was absolutely packed and how 20 years later the message of Rent and all that Jonathan Larson is still as relevant as ever.
"Will I loose my dignity? Will someone care?" Despite their ongoing grief (I'm sure) how proud must Mr & Mrs Larson be of their boy and many people his work has affected.
Go and see this show if you can.

At one point they were virtually queuing out of the theatre. Theatre staff said they had never seen anything like it before. Seemed to all be part of a very large party there.

Maybe they'd come straight from a march? Should have gone to the "secret" ones at the bottom of the theatre- loads more cubicles and now queue! I was there yesterday with viserys I'm writing a blog post about it, but for me, as someone who has been a fan for a long long time, and done far too much academic analysis of it, this blew me away. It's been a long time since Rent had such a profound affect on me. |

Just back from tonight's show, which was phenomenal. It's quite difficult to put it into words, as like many others on this thread I too am a Renthead, and have a lot of memories linked to the show. I've been in a couple of amateur productions but had never seen it live, so this was a real treat.
As today was the day the world lost Jonathan Larson twenty one years ago, the director made an announcement at the start of the show to mark the occasion, and together with the cast and crew, we applauded his work and how many hearts he had touched around the world. Then the show started.
There was some really strong performances from everyone, Philippa Stefani and Layton Williams stood out in particular. Ryan O'Gorman's 'I'll Cover You Reprise' was so heart-wrenching, and Lucie Jones had some hilarious moments. Billy Cullum is a fantastic Mark, a lovely balanced portrayal of funny but also sad, particularly when he feels alone. Ross Hunter had a great voice, just could have done with a little more emotion I thought. The ensemble were fantastic too.
I'm so glad it's had a sold-out run in London because they deserve it - this is a really special show and I hope to catch it again on tour!

Thanks for sharing haz23, a friend of mind linked me to Bruce's speech (it's on FB and Twitter I believe, I'll try and find a link later) and it was lovely.
I always get emotional about the anniversary of Larson's death, but it seemed more so this year having just seen the production.
I agree about Ryan O'Gorman- his performance is so moving, and he's such a compelling actor. Phillipa Stefani is also just incredible across the whole performance.
