Othello, is an Indian General in the British Raj who falls for the daughter of the Duke set during the Bagh Massacre.
Iago a sociopath, cannot accept he is inferior to an ‘Indian' General and has no qualms in plotting his destruction, Ricki Lawton excels in the role with the only reservation that his destructive intent is so strong that it is sometimes difficult to determine why all around him are so trusting and believe in his inherent honesty.
When we meet Othello he is a a steadfast epitome of an assimilated English Officer and Desdemona a feisty young woman who knows her own mind and is an equal participant in the lovers tryst, as Iago’s plotting gathers pace Othello’s facade crumbles and Desdemona becomes utterly perplexed by her husbands transformation.
The simple staging and lighting provide an intensity that as we career towards the inevitable conclusion that even after countless productions had me gripped unlike any other.
Cannot agree more with the 4 Star Stage review, “Elegant, aesthetically and artistically accomplished staging of Shakespeare’s emotive tragedy"
The purist might say the artistic licence may be a stretch too far to meet the Indian setting, for me if you want to experience a truly special Othello this production comes highly recommended.
