Am always really really excited when new work is announced in musical theatre as it is more often than not about creative people trying out fresh ideas.Agreed,it could be a smash or alternatively a complete mess,but let’s give it a chance and see what happens.Musical theatre needs new blood coming through all the time to freshen things up.

Bat did great but from memory there was quite a lot of “it’s going to be dreadful” conversation. I was probably one of them saying it! 😆
I just wonder if stuff that opens outside London or originates from outside London is automatically assumed to be inferior until proven otherwise.

For me, it's nothing to do with where it opens, it just because the whole thing sounds naff (obviously I'm not the shows's target audience, I still use the word naff!)
On paper it's as bad as Club Tropicana. A terrible sounding story with pop songs shoehorned in to it, with a forced get up and dance finale.
I don't get why people who didn't go to Club Tropicana suddenly want to go to this. it's the same jukebox musical with an obviously bigger budget.

Therefore a different target audience. Different marketing strategy. Jumping on the medieval period appeal, Six-style. There's also the fact Romeo & Juliet has been ingrained in the students of many generations as it was taught at school, so its familiarity helps drive it.

I wonder if the show opening in London around the same time as both Mary Poppins and Dear Even Hansen will be a help or a hindrance, with those 2 shows having so much buzz already. It could take & Juliet with it, or I guess it could kinda get lost amidst the hype of those 2 shows.

I think Mary Poppins is a different target audience to that of &Juliet, families and pensions v millennials. Dear Evan Hansen rides a closer line and there maybe some crossover of audience in that instance, but I think DEH tickets will be harder to come by and as a result &Juliet may even benefit from this.

I was fully expecting a carcrash (well nearly 🏍) but by making the music and the voices the most important part and keeping it straight faced they avoided it.

Well Motown was technically a hit (lord knows why).
I just don’t know who this show is meant to appeal to. It seems like a classic Shaftesbury flop to me.

When new musicals opens outside of London the total cost of a matinee seat plus travel by public transport (always booked in advance) is usually less than just the ticket price in the West End. The front row is also much easier to get.
That's certainly the case with & Juliet ( Manchester) and On Your Feet (Leicester) and it was for Bat Out Of Hell.

Tickets in London are normally not that competitive unless we are talking about a Hamilton, a Harry Potter or Dear Evan Hansen.

Is the Shaftesbury still considered to be cursed? ‘Hairspray’ started a resurgence, ‘Memphis’ did ok and I never saw ‘Motown’ discount that heavily? It really isn’t that off the beaten track.

Just like buses, you wait for one musical featuring the music of Britney Spears to turn up (well somebody must have) and then two arrive.
Headed to Chicago in October as a replacement for the cancelled and unfortunately titled Michael Jackson bio-musical 'Don't Stop 'Til you Get Enough' is the Britney musical 'Once Upon a One More Time'. Apparently the next stop after Chicago is Broadway.
Surely it's only a matter of time before 'When Will I Be Famous? - The Bros Musical' is announced.
